CMR: India's smartphone market grew 4% year-on-year in the first quarter of 2020

According to CMR’s India Mobile Phone Market Data for the first quarter of 2020, smartphone shipments in India grew 4% year-on-year. The first wave of 5G smartphones hit the market, accounting for 2% of total smartphone shipments in the first quarter of 2020. Before the coronavirus hit, good consumer demand supported modest growth in the smartphone market.

Xiaomi (30%), vivo (17%), and Samsung (16%) ranked the top three in the smartphone rankings in the first quarter of 2020. Realme and IQOO released 5G smartphones for the first time, with the Realme X50 Pro accounting for the majority of 5G shipments.

The feature phone market declined by 20% year-on-year. This was mainly due to consumers migrating from feature phones to smartphones. The duration of 2G feature phones increased by 6% year-on-year, with ITEL (22%), Samsung (21%) and LAVA (18%) accounting for the top three in feature phone shipments.

Key market highlights in the first quarter of 2020

Xiaomi continued to lead the Indian smartphone market, with its market share increasing by 3% year-on-year.

VIVO grew 45% year-on-year, with the Y91i and Y series accounting for the majority of shipments in the first quarter.

Samsung's year-on-year decline was 41%, as it ceded space in the low-cost smartphone segment (less than INR 10,000) to the likes of Xiaomi and Realme.

realme continued its strong performance with a year-on-year growth of 149%, providing more value to consumers through its interesting product portfolio, aggressive marketing and offline strategies.

OPPO grew 82% year-on-year, driven by strong performance of its A series (including A5s, A31 and A9 2020).

Transsion Group (ITEL, Infinix and Tecno brands) grew its market share by 125% in the smartphone segment, primarily in the sub-Rs 7,000 price segment.
