Omdia: Global iPhone 11 shipments reached 19.5 million units from January to March 2020

In the first quarter of 2020 , iPhone 11 ranked first in the global smartphone market. From January to March , iPhone 11 shipped 19.5 million units. Despite the global spread of COVID-19 , iPhone 11 shipments increased by 5.9 million units compared to 13.6 million units of iPhone XR , the best performing model in the first quarter of 2019 .

The iPhone 11 was $ 50 cheaper than its predecessor when it was released and featured an upgraded dual-camera setup. The iPhone XR had a single camera. The upgraded camera boosted sales.

Samsung's Galaxy A51 ranked second with 6.8 million units shipped, successfully replacing last year's Galaxy J4 Plus and retaining the second position again.

However, Xiaomi's performance in the first quarter of this year was the most eye-catching. Xiaomi Redmi Note 8 and Redmi Note 8 Pro ranked third and fourth with shipments of 6.6 million and 6.1 million units respectively . This is also the first time that Xiaomi models ranked third and fourth in shipments in the first quarter.

Apple has four models in the top ten, with iPhone 11 , iPhone XR , iPhone 11 Pro Max and iPhone 11 Pro ranking first, fifth, sixth and eighth respectively. In the first quarter of last year, Xs and Xs Max did not make the top ten. iPhone XR was the only new model to make the top ten at the time. But this year, all three newly released models made it to the top ten.

Samsung also had four models in the top ten. However, looking at its latest flagship series, only the Galaxy S20 Plus 5G made it into the top ten. The other Samsung models are mid-range and low-end devices. Samsung's Galaxy S series, released at the beginning of the year, has maintained its top position in the rankings in the first quarter. However, the shipments and rankings of flagship products have been under pressure since the launch.

Jusy Hong, director of smartphone research at Omdia , said: “The increase in the number of Galaxy series models has spread shipments across more models. The price increase of new phones has also made flagship products less attractive to the majority of consumers. ”

In the 5G smartphone space, Samsung has much better news. The Galaxy S20 Plus 5G took the crown in global 5G smartphone shipments in the first quarter. Huawei's Mate 30 5G and Mate 30 Pro 5G took the second and third spots. Most of Huawei's 5G models are shipped to the domestic Chinese market, and as the Chinese 5G market expands, shipments have increased significantly. Samsung has launched and sold 5G smartphones to most regions where 5G services and networks are popular : the United States, Europe, and parts of Asia.

However, with the spread of COVID-19 , the smartphone market is expected to shrink this year, and a slowdown in 5G expansion in many countries outside of China is inevitable. The Chinese smartphone market has recovered rapidly since March . With Chinese brand manufacturers actively promoting 5G smartphones, Omdia expects that the top few spots on the 5G smartphone list will soon be occupied by Chinese brand manufacturers.
