Strategy Analytics: Global smartphone battery market revenue reached $1.5 billion in Q1 2020

The latest research report released by Strategy Analytics' Mobile Component Technologies service, "Smartphone Battery Market Share in Q1 2020: LG Chem Narrows the Gap with ATL", points out that the global smartphone battery market revenue reached US$1.5 billion in Q1 2020.

The report pointed out that in Q1 2020, the revenue of the entire smartphone battery market increased by 5% year-on-year. ATL (Amperex Technology Ltd.) owned by TDK leads the smartphone battery market with a revenue share of 36%, followed by LG Chem and Samsung SDI. In Q1 2020, the top three manufacturers obtained nearly 82% of the revenue share in the global smartphone battery market.

Jeffrey Mathews, an analyst at Strategy Analytics, said: “Smartphone OEMs are adopting higher battery capacities and customized lithium-ion polymer (Li-Po) batteries, which has driven smartphone battery market revenue to grow every year.”

Jeffrey added: "ATL supplies higher capacity batteries to leading smartphone OEMs, while LG Chem has expanded its customer base by winning large orders for flagship smartphones."

Stuart Robinson, Executive Director of the Strategy Analytics Handset Component Technologies service, commented: “Demand for smartphone batteries is expected to be impacted by the decline in smartphone shipments and the halt in global smartphone production due to the COVID-19 pandemic. We note that battery cell suppliers will provide OEMs with custom battery cells for use in flagship smartphones, which will drive revenue growth for battery suppliers in calendar year 2020.”
