Mixpanel: iPhone X penetration rate has surpassed iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus

Data from mobile data analysis platform Mixpanel shows that this year, the popularity of Apple's flagship product iPhone X has quickly surpassed that of iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus.

This data comes from using the Mixpanel software development kit. It does not have specific numbers but is presented in the form of a percentage. It is more appropriate to call it "penetration rate."

Through these data, Mixpanel can notice that iPhone X users account for 4.76% of all iPhone users, higher than 3.59% of iPhone 8 Plus and 2.78% of iPhone 8, but if the iPhone 8 series is calculated comprehensively, their total number still exceeds iPhone X. However, the growth trend of iPhone X is much faster than that of iPhone 8 series. From the red line, we can see that its popularity (curve slope) is very fast after its release.

Mixpanel classifies users of iPhone 7 series and earlier as users of older models. Unsurprisingly, they account for about 60% of the market share, with most people replacing their phones after about two and a half years, after which they sell the phone to other family members, who are still using it.

From the green line in the figure, we can see that after the new models are launched, the number of old models is gradually decreasing.

Apple CEO Tim Cook did not directly answer the question about iPhone X sales in the third quarter earnings call, only saying that demand was "very strong." Some commentators believe that the iPhone X was not launched until the end of this quarter, so the specific data of this phone will not be discussed until the next quarter.
