A girl born in the 1990s lost her right eye in a car accident and now becomes an ophthalmologist

China Science and Technology News Network, November 28 (Jin Kaiyi) Recently, a video of a girl in Beijing posting an artificial eye has attracted the attention of netizens. It is understood that the girl had her right eye removed in a car accident in 2013, and has been wearing an artificial eye since then. After meeting many people with the same situation as herself, she decided to become an "eye prosthesis" to help disabled people in the same situation regain their confidence.

An artificial eye is a prosthetic product. If an eyeball is lost for some reason, such as severe trauma or late-stage glaucoma, in addition to blindness, the eye pain symptoms will become more severe. As a last resort, the eyeball needs to be removed and a prosthetic eye installed. This can improve the appearance of the eye and make it look more normal.

Prosthetic eyes cannot restore vision, but they can remedy facial defects. The so-called artificial eye consists of two parts: a spherical artificial eye base that replaces the eyeball and an artificial eye lens that maintains the appearance of the eye. The artificial eye base is installed by leaving a part of the scleral tissue of the eyeball wall when the eyeball is removed, and the artificial eye base is installed in the scleral wall of the eye during the operation.

The artificial eye will be installed with the postoperative review. About one month after the operation, when the bleeding and inflammatory reaction of the operation have been basically eliminated and the condition of the eye is basically stable, the artificial eye will be installed to give the eye a relatively normal appearance. During the use of the artificial eye, the artificial eye can be taken out regularly for cleaning and disinfection. The artificial eye base is installed in the scleral wall of the eyeball and is generally not taken out.

At present, there are endless materials for artificial eyes, such as glass artificial eyes, polymer artificial eyes, crystal artificial eyes, etc. The most widely used is polymer artificial eyes. According to authoritative statistics, more than 95% of countries in the world currently use polymer materials to customize artificial eyes. Glass artificial eyes, ceramic artificial eyes and other materials have gradually been eliminated by the market.
