A 26-year-old boy suddenly became unable to move after having his wisdom teeth removed, just because he neglected this matter

If one day you wake up in the morning and find yourself unable to move, it would be more terrifying than the sky falling.

Recently, 26-year-old Xiao Yu experienced this terrifying moment. He sought medical advice everywhere within a month, but could not find the cause of the disease. Finally, the doctor finally found the key to the problem. It turned out to be related to the two wisdom teeth he had extracted before...

Wake up and can't get up

The 26-year-old boy was lying down for a month

Xiao Yu, 26, who lives in Xiaoshan, works in a shopping mall. He is usually busy but feels very fulfilled. His peaceful days were broken one day in early October.

That afternoon, Xiao Yu felt pain in his waist. He thought it was because he walked too much at work and was too tired, so he lay down early. Unexpectedly, he lay down and couldn't get up! The next morning, his waist began to hurt so much that he couldn't get up at all, let alone walk. Xiao Yu's mother was scared and hurriedly took him to a nearby hospital for treatment. The results of the orthopedic MRI showed that Xiao Yu had a mild lumbar disc herniation, and the doctor prescribed painkillers and ointment for him.

The painkillers did not really work. Xiao Yu's condition became worse and worse. He could not get out of bed at all. He had repeated fevers, with his temperature rising to 39 degrees Celsius at any time. He could not eat. A healthy young man just lay in bed for a month and lost a lot of weight!

During this month, accompanied by his mother, Xiao Yu went to many hospitals and departments, but the cause of his illness was never found. Finally, the local hospital diagnosed him with sacroiliac joint damage caused by ankylosing spondylitis and referred him to the Rheumatology and Immunology Department of Hangzhou First People's Hospital.

At the No. 1 Municipal Hospital, Huang Jiao, deputy chief physician of the Rheumatology and Immunology Department, received Xiao Yu. Xiao Yu could hardly walk upright and had severe pain in his sacroiliac joint. He could only take one or two steps with the help of his mother.

After peeling off the layers, the truth is finally revealed

Huang Jiao also felt something was wrong when he saw Xiao Yu almost collapse. Ankylosing spondylitis patients usually suffer from sacroiliitis, and the main symptom is also lumbar pain. Although Xiao Yu's back pain meets some of the symptoms of ankylosing spondylitis, his repeatedly elevated body temperature caught Huang Jiao's attention. Generally speaking, ankylosing spondylitis is not accompanied by fever, so what is the root cause of the disease?

A series of subsequent examinations confirmed that Xiao Yu was suffering from suppurative sacroiliitis. Suppurative arthritis is a rare form of sacroiliitis that can be caused by various reasons, such as fatigue, trauma, blood flow or local infection.

Could it be caused by a bloodstream infection? A series of subsequent examinations confirmed Huang Jiao's guess. Chest CT showed that Xiao Yu had a lung infection. Further examinations revealed that he had a streptococcal infection in his lungs. The mystery was solved. Xiao Yu's suppurative sacroiliitis was caused by an infection, and the infection was more severe and spread throughout the body. Afterwards, the doctor treated Xiao Yu with antibacterial drugs, and Xiao Yu's condition quickly improved. His body temperature dropped and his back pain gradually eased.

In less than a week, he had basically recovered to his previous state, could get out of bed and walk normally, and was soon discharged from the hospital.

This severe disease was caused by tooth extraction

Xiao Yu himself was also puzzled. He was usually healthy and had not suffered any trauma recently. Where did the infection come from? Huang Jiao repeatedly asked Xiao Yu about his medical history and found the reason. It turned out that two weeks before the onset of the disease, Xiao Yu had two wisdom teeth extracted. According to Xiao Yu's recollection, he often stayed up late during that period. On the day of the tooth extraction, he had continuous bleeding and was swollen and painful for several days.

Huang Jiao judged that Xiao Yu's inexplicable systemic infection was basically related to the tooth extraction. How could wisdom tooth extraction lead to systemic infection? Dr. Huang explained that the infection was mainly caused by common bacteria in the mouth, such as streptococci, which entered the blood through the wound left after tooth extraction and spread throughout the body, causing infection.

After tooth extraction, it is generally easier to have symptoms of local infection, including swelling, pain, and continuous bleeding. Continuous bleeding indicates that there may be local infection or inadequate hemostasis. Infection after wisdom tooth extraction is related to the patient's poor resistance and wound infection after tooth extraction. If the infection spreads throughout the body, it will cause persistent fever.

For this reason, doctors remind that tooth extraction, especially the more difficult wisdom teeth, should be done with extreme caution. Tooth extraction is not suitable for some special times and people. For example, women should avoid tooth extraction during menstruation, and people with serious cardiovascular diseases and high blood pressure above 180/100mmHg should be especially careful when tooth extraction is done. In addition, some patients with blood diseases should consult a doctor before tooth extraction. For normal people, tooth extraction should also be postponed when immunity is low, such as staying up late for consecutive nights, catching a cold, etc. In addition, people with dental diseases have more local bacteria, so they should also pay special attention.

It should be pointed out that tooth extraction should be carried out in a professional hospital in a standardized manner. For difficult tooth extractions, try to choose the morning to leave sufficient time for observation and treatment so that any accidents can be dealt with in time.
