YouGov: 68% of Americans dislike virality

Social media and widely distributed online information allow some Americans to experience the lives of Hollywood stars or the rich. Some people may still remember the video of an American professor receiving a remote interview from the British BBC because his child broke into the live broadcast screen. This video has been viewed 84 million times on Facebook. In the latest YouGov survey, 68% of Americans said they don’t like virality. But among those who want to become famous in a short period of time, millennials account for the majority.

When asked if they would like to become famous on social media, only 18% of Americans said they would, and nearly half (48%) said they would never want to go viral. The most opposed to going viral were Americans over 55, with 81% saying so, suggesting that the older you get, the less you want to be notorious online.

Younger millennials (18-24) are most likely to accept that something is going viral (35%), while older millennials (25-34) are less likely to say so (28%). Younger millennials are also the most likely (75%) to share news and information with friends and family on social media, according to YouGov.
