The iPhone may be number one in many markets, but Android is growing rapidly, especially in developing countries where many manufacturers offer cheaper phones powered by Android.

In the Asia-Pacific region, some markets tend to prefer Android, while some countries have more iOS users. According to Near's data in the third quarter of 2015, most female smartphone users prefer iPhones, while male smartphone users prefer Android.

The trend also exists in Hong Kong, where 41% of women and 24% of men use iPhones; in Japan, 59% of women and 35% of men own iPhones; and in Singapore, 60% of women and 43% of men use iPhones.

But in less developed markets, most people use Android phones.

For example, in Indonesia, 95% of male smartphone users and 93% of female users use Android phones. In India, 95% of male users and 94% of female users use Android phones. The index in Malaysia is not as extreme, with 91% of male users and 86% of female users owning Android phones. In the Philippines, 91% of male users and 85% of female users use Android phones.

In markets where the iPhone is popular, users aged 26 to 35 are the most likely to prefer the iPhone. But younger and older smartphone users prefer Android phones.
