Apple's release of the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, which have larger screens, may prompt many mobile website designers to revamp their sites.

According to Adobe's research, most of the traffic to US mobile websites in June 2014 came from Apple devices, accounting for 54%; in comparison, Samsung, which ranked second, accounted for about 24%. In terms of tablet website traffic, Apple performed even better, accounting for 80%.

StatCounter's July 2014 survey showed similar results. According to the study, Apple devices (excluding tablets) accounted for 51.6% of mobile traffic in the second quarter of 2014, Samsung accounted for 25.0%, LG accounted for 4.7%, HTC accounted for 3.1%, and RIM/BlackBerry accounted for 1.6%.

In terms of mobile network traffic share by operating system, StatCounter data shows that iOS ranks first with 51.7%, Android OS accounts for 42.4%, and BlackBerry accounts for 1.6%.

With all that in mind, it makes sense that Adobe found that Apple's Safari browser (both smartphones and tablets) accounted for 59.1% of website traffic. Android was second with just over a fifth; Google's Chrome was third. But Adobe noted that Google's browser share was increasing while Safari and Android's were shrinking, a trend that will continue as Chrome and Android combine.
