Distimo's recent report provides an in-depth look at the Amazon Appstore, providing forecasts for daily downloads and individual revenue. The report also compares the Amazon Appstore with third-party app stores on the Android platform and Google Play. App tracking company Distimo released its April report, listing the top 200 free apps on the US Amazon Appstore, which had a total of 16 million downloads in March. Similar to Apple's App Store and Google Play, the rankings are dominated by games, with Imangi Studios' Temple Run 2 becoming the most downloaded free app. In addition, 8 of the top 10 apps are games, with only Netflix and Facebook being non-game apps. Of course, it's no surprise that Google Play has a much higher number of free app installs than the Amazon Appstore. The Dutch company added that Google Play is about ten times larger than the Amazon Appstore in the United States, and to illustrate the difference, Distimo used Halfbrick Studios' Fruit Ninja Free Edition as a comparison, which ranks ninth on the Amazon Appstore free chart and has 9.1 times fewer downloads than Google Play, with 2.3 million downloads on Google Play in March and 250,000 downloads on the Amazon Appstore. According to Distimo, the top 200 paid apps on the Amazon Appstore had 1.6 million downloads, generating a one-time revenue of $3 million. Mojang's Minecraft ($6.99) ranked first on the Amazon Appstore's paid app list for March. While the Amazon Appstore and Google Play differ greatly in terms of free apps, the difference in paid apps is another matter entirely. Of the top 1,000 paid apps on both stores, Google Play had only twice as many paid downloads as the Amazon Appstore. Distimo used Imangi Studios' Temple Run: Oz as an example, which was only 3.4 times less downloaded on the Amazon Appstore than on Google Play, with 140,000 and 42,000 downloads on Google Play and the Amazon Appstore, respectively. While Distimo reports that Google Play has twice as many paid downloads as Amazon Appstore, the gap is smaller when it comes to revenue. The top 200 paid apps on Google Play generated $5.1 million in revenue in the U.S. in March, which is only 1.7 times that of Amazon Appstore. In terms of free app downloads, Rovio, the developer of Angry Birds, ranked first on the Amazon Appstore, and the company's recently launched game The Croods quickly entered the sixth place in the free download list. Distimo's April report for the US Amazon Appstore is based on data collected in March. It should also be noted that Distimo also plans to add Amazon Appstore data to its analytics product AppiQ, which will allow customers to see the performance of nearly any Android, iOS, and soon even Amazon Appstore app, including downloads, revenue, and more. Distimo, a Dutch company founded in 2009, concluded that the Amazon Appstore has grown rapidly in the past year and is likely to become a strong competitor to Google Play, because the difference in downloads and revenue of paid apps between the Amazon Appstore and Google Play is not particularly large (in addition, App Annie has also added the Amazon Appstore to its app tracking system).
