Tom's Hardware: Android mobile browser performance test data comparison

Unlike the iOS platform, there are many browser applications on Android and the competition is fierce. Tom's Hardware, which often conducts collective tests on desktop browsers, today turned its attention to Android for the first time and examined the performance of the seven major browsers.
The Android browsers included in this comparison test include:

Android native browser (hereinafter referred to as Browser) : Produced by Google, WebKit engine, latest version 4.1.1, only supports Android.

Chrome : Produced by Google, using WebKit engine, the latest version is 18.1025464, and also supports Chrome OS, iOS, Linux, Mac OS X, and Windows.

Dolphin : A domestic Dolphin browser produced by MoboTap, using WebKit engine. The latest version is 9.0.3 and also supports iOS.

Firefox : Produced by Mozilla, using Gecko engine, the latest version is 17.0, and also supports iOS, Linux, Mac OS X, and Windows.

Maxthon : A domestic browser based on Maxthon, using the WebKit engine. The latest version is 1.7. It also supports iOS, Mac OS X, and Windows.

Opera : From Northern Europe, using Presto engine, the latest version is 12.10, and also supports iOS, Linux, Mac OS X, and Windows.

Sleipnir : Shenma Browser, produced by Japan's Fenrir Inc, uses WebKit engine, the latest version is 2.5, and also supports iOS, Mac OS X, and Windows.

As for other browsers that also have a lot of users, it may be that they are not famous enough at Tom's Hardware, so they are not chosen, not that they are deliberately ignored.

Loading time test

Page loading time: Opera wins first, followed by Maxthon and Shenma. Firefox is significantly slower.

Startup time: Chrome is the fastest, Opera and Maxthon are also wrong. Dolphin is too slow this time.

Uncached page load time: Maxthon is number one again, Dolphin and Opera are neck and neck. Chrome is ridiculously slow.

Cached page loading time: Except for Firefox which is unusually slow, the others are actually not much different. Opera is slightly faster, and Maxthon is slightly slower.

The above are the comprehensive results. The original results are as follows:

Not cached

Cached pages show that Chrome is mostly at the bottom of the list when not cached, with only Google.com loading quickly. It is not accidental that Firefox cached pages load slowly, almost all sites are not fast.

HTML5 Performance Testing

Overall results: Dolphin Browser has the Jetpack HTML5 engine, and its performance is really good, 37% ahead of the second-place Chrome. Maxthon is fifth, and Firefox is once again the deputy leader.

The following are the actual results of each sub-test:

Dolphin won in most of the projects, and it deserves to be ranked first. Opera had some trouble in the Mandelbrot project. Although Firefox won once in Impact, its other results were very bad, and it was not wrong to be ranked last.

JavaScript Performance Testing

JavaScript overall results: Dolphin took the top spot again, but Shenma followed closely behind, Android native browser and Maxthon were also acceptable. Firefox still had a big gap, and Opera unfortunately ranked last.

The following are the actual results of each sub-test:

Dolphins won easily in many events, which made Opera a little unreasonable.

DOM performance testing

Chrome won big, Opera lost again, and the other gaps were small.

Psychedelic Browsing and WebVizBench did not run successfully on all the tested Android browsers, only JSGameBench was completed, so this chapter only covers this project.

Hardware accelerated performance testing

Dolphin and Maxthon are on par with each other, Shenma and the native browser are lagging behind obviously, and the other three are terrible. It's a bit surprising that Google Chrome is so miserable, this is your own system.

Responsiveness test This is a subjective test. The front page of Tom's Hardware website is loaded, and the mobile version of the website and the "rich" WBGP page are loaded in the back end. The smoothness of the operation is scored: 5 points are completely smooth, and 0 points are completely stuck.

Responsiveness testing

Maxthon ranked first with a high score of 4.5, which is very smooth overall, but a little behind iOS Safari. Although Firefox has been controversial for its interface delay, its score of 4.0 is not low. Chrome and Opera both only scored 3.0, and the lag can be clearly felt.

Safety performance test

Chrome passed 16 of the 17 security tests, Firefox ranked second with 13. Opera only passed 10, while the other four passed 12 each.

Standards compliance testing

Dolphin topped the list with 82 points, thanks to its Jetpack HTML5 engine. Firefox and Chrome both scored 70 points, and the others were all around 60 points.

Summarizing the above test results, the final comprehensive scores and rankings are as follows:

Dolphin, which repeatedly stood out, finally won the first place, with a score of 196, 12.6% more than the second place Maxthon. Although the Japanese Shenma browser has a strange name and not many users, its third place is really unexpected, and it is indeed "virtuous and artistic".

The native browser that comes with Android may be much simpler in terms of functions, but its performance is actually not weak . It is encouraging that it has achieved fourth place. Therefore, if you are looking for a simple and fast mobile Internet experience, it is still worth considering.

Chrome, Firefox, and Opera are all very famous and powerful on the desktop, but their mobile versions are not very satisfactory , and it seems that the Android platform still needs to be studied. Perhaps because of this, Google Chrome has not been released yet and does not have the courage to become the system default browser now.

Of course, this review only examines performance and speed. As for features, they vary greatly from one browser to another, which is also a key factor affecting the Internet experience, but it is not easy to quantify. When choosing a browser, in addition to looking at which browser runs faster, which browser has more convenient functions and personal taste is often more important.
