Will you turn into "Lin Daiyu" when the wind blows? Don't take it lightly...

Xiao Cheng (pseudonym), 25 years old this year, has developed the symptom of easily shedding tears when blown by the wind since three years ago. At first she didn't care, but in late autumn this year, she would often shed tears regardless of whether she was blown by the wind or not.

"I run a small offline store. If I cry every day, customers will not be in the mood to buy things when they see me." In order to prevent the symptoms of tearing from worsening, Xiao Cheng came to the tear duct/eye and nose related department of the Aier Eye Hospital affiliated to Wuhan University for examination. After the doctor's examination, she was diagnosed with tear duct obstruction.

Xie Yangyang, secretary of the tear duct group of the Hubei Province region of the Aier Eye Hospital Group and attending physician of the tear duct/eye and nose related specialists of the Aier Eye Hospital affiliated to Wuhan University, said: If the tear duct is blocked, the tears produced by the eyes cannot flow into the nasal cavity, but accumulate in the conjunctival sac. Patients often have symptoms of "tears in the eyes" and "tears that cannot stop". When the tear duct obstruction is mild, it does not have a big impact on the patient and is easily ignored. However, if it is not treated for a long time, the tear duct obstruction is likely to cause intraocular infection and even blindness.

What is tear duct disease?

The human eye will constantly produce tears to moisten our cornea. These tears are produced by the lacrimal glands. So where do these endless tears go? In addition to some tears evaporating into the air when the eyes are open, the other part flows into the nasal cavity through a channel, which is like the sewer of the eye. We call it the tear duct.

If the tear duct is blocked, the tears produced by the eyes cannot flow into the nasal cavity, but accumulate in the conjunctival sac and then flow back out, so patients often have "eyes full of tears" and "tears flowing continuously". If the lacrimal sac inflammation continues, there will be increased secretions and even "pus discharge". This problem of frequent tears and even pus discharge is actually a disease, collectively known as "tear duct disease".

Tear duct obstruction often occurs at the lacrimal puncta, lacrimal canaliculi, common lacrimal duct, the junction of the lacrimal sac and nasolacrimal duct, and the lower opening of the nasolacrimal duct. The main symptom is epiphora.

Zhang Jiang, a member of the Systemic Disease-related Ophthalmology Group of the Ophthalmology Branch of the Chinese Medical Doctor Association and director of the tear duct/eye and nose-related specialty of the Aier Eye Hospital affiliated to Wuhan University, emphasized: Patients with tear duct problems should avoid the misuse of eye drops, especially hormone eye drops, which will not only cause dry eyes and discomfort, but may also cause glaucoma and cataracts. Therefore, if you find yourself with symptoms of tear duct obstruction, you should go to the hospital in time and follow the doctor's advice to avoid secondary damage to your eyes.
