Gartner: Android OS sales market share in Q3 2011 was 52.5%

According to research data released by Gartner, iResearch found that in the third quarter of 2011, the total sales of global smartphone operating systems reached US$115 million, up 42.0% from the same period last year. Among them, Android operating system ranked first, with a market share of 52.5%; Symbian system ranked second with a market share of 16.9%; and iOS operating system ranked third with a market share of 15.0%.

iResearch believes that although the sales of Android smartphone operating system has surpassed Symbian system and ranked first in the market, there is still fierce competition in the smartphone operating system market. The main reasons are that, firstly, the open source characteristics, rich interface and strong selectivity of Android operating system have won the support of many mobile phone manufacturers, and Android has strong market competitiveness in a certain period of time; secondly, the popularity of Apple's products such as iPhone and iPad has increased the market share of iOS system, which is a strong competitor of Android. In the future, with the popularization and development of smartphones, the market competition among major operating systems will become increasingly fierce.
