asymco: Global smartphone market share in 2011

Asymco, which specializes in creating infographics, has given us the latest global smartphone market share.

Data shows that currently 69% of global mobile phone shipments are still non-smartphones, while smartphone shipments finally broke through 30% this year.

Among the 30% of smartphone shipments, the share of each platform is as follows:

  • Android or customized operating systems based on Android: 17.6%
  • iPhone: 4.4%
  • Symbian: 4.3%
  • BlackBerry: 2.76%
  • Bada: 1%
  • Windows Phone: 0.5%

Judging from the market share of various manufacturers, we can easily observe the trend of the smartphone market in the past four years: from the dominance of Nokia and RIM in 2007, to the launch of the iPhone which completely overturned the market rules, to the flourishing market today.

  • Nokia and RIM's rise and fall were almost synchronized;
  • In July 2008, the launch of iPhone 3G truly brought iPhone sales to a challenging height;
  • HTC entered the market very early and produced the first batch of Android devices to compete with the iPhone. In the past four years, through efficient innovation, its market share has stabilized;
  • Samsung's sales have been growing steadily and have exploded this year. In the past year, its market share has almost swapped with Nokia's. The market appeal of its flagship product Galaxy S II has contributed greatly to this (sales exceeded 10 million in 6 months).
  • Sony Ericsson, LG, ZTE and Motorola have become the representative manufacturers of the second camp.

However, sometimes “sales volume” does not tell the whole story. The following figure shows the results of a survey on “mobile phone user satisfaction” presented by Apple CEO Tim Cook at this year’s iPhone 4S launch event. The source of the information is the survey organization ChangeWave Research.

This is really an interesting result. I wonder what Samsung, which has the largest shipment volume, would think.
