Sarcopenia: How to Identify It at Home

This is the 3830th article of Da Yi Xiao Hu

There is a saying that goes "Money can't buy thinness in old age", but in fact, "thinness in old age" is not scientific. We should advocate "money can't buy muscle in old age". Today I will introduce to you a disease that is very common among us elderly people, but currently not received much attention by everyone, called "sarcopenia".

Sarcopenia first refers to the age-related reduction in muscle mass, accompanied by a decrease in muscle strength and/or physical function. The aging and atrophy of skeletal muscle is one of the important signs of human aging, and it is very easy to cause joint damage and fractures. Elderly people with sarcopenia usually have difficulty standing, slow steps, and are prone to falls and fractures, increasing bed rest time and limited activity. In addition, sarcopenia can also affect organ function and may even cause heart and lung failure, or even death.

Therefore, early identification, early intervention and treatment of sarcopenia are very important for improving the quality of life of the elderly.

How to do early self-screening at home?

Older people can do the following preliminary screening for sarcopenia on their own: measure the calf circumference and complete the Simple Five-Item Rating Questionnaire (SARC-F).

Calf measurement

Use a soft tape measure to measure the calf circumference (the thickest part of the calf). If it is less than 33cm for women (,) or less than 34cm for men, you should be alert to sarcopenia.

Simple five-item rating questionnaire

(This questionnaire includes 5 parts: strength, assisted walking, standing up, climbing stairs and falls, and a total score ≥4 points is considered a positive screening) is a good choice.

Note: 10 pounds equals 4.5 kg

For elderly friends at home, follow the above screening method. If they have the above symptoms and their self-assessment score is greater than or equal to 4 points, please go to the hospital actively for treatment and take timely prevention measures.
