Public Cases

The patient is a 37-year-old female with blurred vision in her left eye.

1. First meeting with the patient

I have had poor vision in my left eye since I was a child, so I went to the hospital for a check-up many years ago. I was diagnosed with congenital cataracts, but I didn't take it too seriously and didn't receive formal treatment.

Recently, I heard from a neighbor that surgery could restore my vision, so I went to the hospital to try my luck. When I arrived at the hospital, the doctor first asked me to do a vision test, and then carefully observed my eyes under the slit lamp, and found that the lens of both eyes was indeed cloudy to varying degrees. The doctor quickly diagnosed me with congenital cataracts based on my blurred vision for many years and various examinations.

2. Treatment Process

I was hospitalized at the doctor's suggestion. After a conversation, the doctor recommended that I undergo phacoemulsification combined with intraocular lens implantation to improve cataracts. My purpose of coming to the hospital was also to undergo surgery, so I quickly agreed to the doctor's suggestion. Because my left eye had obvious symptoms of blurred vision, and the visual acuity test and physical examination also showed that the symptoms of the left eye were more severe, I underwent surgery on the left eye first.

Before the operation, the doctor checked my blood pressure, blood sugar, blood routine, four coagulation tests, liver and kidney function, six hepatitis tests, etc. After confirming that there was no abnormality, the operation lasted 30 minutes and there was no discomfort during the operation. On the second day after the operation, my left eye's vision had recovered to 0.8, which the doctor said was a very ideal vision.

During the follow-up examination a week later, the doctor tried to correct my vision with glasses and found that my corrected vision could reach 1.0. He suggested that the frequency of medication after the operation could be reduced to once a day, and asked me to have regular check-ups. I was also very happy to see that the operation was so successful.

3. Notes

1. Pay attention to eye habits and eye hygiene. Do not rub your eyes frequently or use your eyes for a long time.

2. Exercise should be appropriate. Do not use excessive force, such as carrying heavy objects, or doing strenuous physical exercise;

3. It is recommended to wear a hat and sunglasses when traveling, especially in windy, sandy and bright weather;

4. Develop healthy living habits, maintain a happy mood, and cultivate interests and hobbies;

5. Eat a light diet, low in salt and fat, and eat less sweets;

6. If you feel unwell, seek medical attention promptly and have regular check-ups as directed by your doctor.

6. Doctors’ insights

Although I had blurred vision since I was 7 years old, I had to undergo surgery 30 years later. My vision recovered quickly after the surgery, but based on my own experience, I suggest that all parents pay attention to their children's vision, increase their understanding of the disease, and diagnose and treat it early to avoid affecting their children's health.

Congenital cataracts mostly occur in children, so many children may not tell their parents that they can't see clearly. If the child has obvious vision loss or visual development is affected, I suggest that surgery be taken as soon as possible to treat the disease, and actively correct refraction and amblyopia. In general, if you find that your eyes are not clear or hazy, you must see a doctor as soon as possible and never leave it alone.
