I heard that young people's "eye floaters" can heal themselves?

In life, many people will encounter such situations:

When looking at white walls and bright backgrounds, you will feel that there are several small mosquitoes flying in front of your eyes. No matter how you move your eyes, the small mosquitoes will not disappear. This may be "floaters".

Generally speaking, "eye floaters" are a natural aging phenomenon that is more common in the elderly. Nowadays, due to factors such as excessive eye use and myopia, young people are also suffering from "eye floaters".

What are floaters?

Yan Jing, chief physician, deputy leader of the fundus disease group of Aier Eye Hospital Group in Hubei Province, and deputy director of the fundus disease department of Aier Eye Hospital Affiliated to Wuhan University (Aier Eye Hospital Group Hubei General Hospital), introduced: "Floaters" are also called "vitreous opacities", which are generally a natural physiological phenomenon caused by vitreous aging. It refers to small floating black shadows in front of the eyes, or dot-like, flake-like, or strip-like floating objects, like the shadows of mosquitoes and flies. They are more obvious when looking at a bright white background, and are sometimes accompanied by a sense of flashing.

Who is prone to "floaters"?

①People over 40 years old

② People with high myopia (myopia > 600 degrees)

③People who use electronic products for a long time

Director Yan Jing suggests: For people who are prone to "floaters", in addition to regular eye use, it is recommended to have a fundus examination regularly once a year.

Can young people's "floaters" heal on their own?

The answer is of course: No!

"Floaters" are essentially a physiological phenomenon caused by the aging of the vitreous body of the human eye. The vitreous body is a gelatinous transparent substance, similar to "jelly". Once it is "liquefied", it will produce turbidity, which is irreversible. Therefore, the statement that "young people with 'floaters' will heal themselves" is not correct.

In addition, it should be noted that in medicine, "floaters" are divided into physiological and pathological. Generally speaking, physiological "floaters" have little effect on the eyes and body, so they can be left untreated for the time being and observation is the main approach; but if it is pathological "floaters", you need to seek medical treatment and treatment as soon as possible.

How to treat floaters?

Director Yan Jing pointed out that the treatment of floaters must first determine what type of floaters it is. If it is pathological, it may involve other fundus diseases, and further examination is needed to take appropriate treatment measures based on the actual condition.

If it is physiological, generally no treatment is needed, just regular observation. However, if there is something blocking the eyes, some patients will find it very "eye-catching". At this time, you can go to the hospital to eliminate the "floaters".

Director Yan Jing reminded that in addition to "floaters", macular degeneration, fundus hemorrhage and corneal injury may also cause the symptom of "dark shadows floating in front of the eyes". In short, as long as there is any discomfort in the eyes, decreased vision, dark shadows blocking the eyes or a sudden increase in dark shadows, you should immediately go to a professional ophthalmology hospital for examination and diagnosis, and receive timely treatment.
