Diabetics should be careful about eating and drinking too much during the Chinese New Year!

How did you spend this year's Spring Festival holiday?

Grab red envelopes, check Weibo, watch TV, play mahjong...

When the family gathers together, they not only eat, drink and have fun

It's all kinds of all-night battles!

Under such "high intensity"

Our bodies are challenged from all sides.

Especially - the eyes!

After the Spring Festival, the number of outpatient visits to the diabetic eye disease department of Wuhan University Aier Eye Hospital (Aier Eye Hospital Group Hubei General Hospital) always increases significantly. The cause of the diabetic eye disease patients who come to see the doctor is mostly due to the increase in gatherings during the festival, which leads to unstable blood sugar and induces eye diseases.

01. Impact of diabetes on the eyes

Conjunctiva, cornea - dry eyes

Iris - Iritis

Lens - Cataract

Extraocular muscles - sudden paralytic strabismus

Vitreous, retina - diabetic retinopathy

02. Diabetic retinopathy

There is a retina in the eye that is as important as the film in a camera. There are many blood vessels distributed on the retina. Long-term high blood sugar will damage the small blood vessels, leading to retinal hypoxia and ischemia, which will cause the formation of retinal microaneurysms, bleeding, exudation, vitreous hemorrhage, neovascularization and vitreous retinal proliferative changes.

03. High-risk groups for diabetic retinopathy

Diabetes duration for more than 10 years

Poor blood sugar control

Accompanied by high blood pressure

Diabetic renal complications have occurred

Hyperlipidemia can cause hard exudate deposits in diabetic patients

04. Diabetic retinopathy should be checked regularly

Li Zhaohui, PhD, associate chief physician, and deputy director of the Department of Fundus Diseases at Wuhan University Aier Eye Hospital (Aier Eye Hospital Group Hubei General Hospital), said: Since diabetic fundus lesions are often irreversible, prevention is the key to preventing and treating diabetic retinopathy. Early detection and early treatment are the key points. Regular eye examinations should be carried out from the beginning of the disease:

1. When a patient is diagnosed with diabetes, they should immediately undergo a comprehensive eye examination and establish a relevant case file;

2. For diabetic patients without fundus lesions, it is recommended to dilate the pupil and examine the fundus once every 6 to 12 months;

3. For diabetic patients who have developed fundus lesions, they should be examined once every 3 to 6 months and receive timely treatment;

4. Women with gestational diabetes should have their fundus examined once every 3 months.

■Reminder

Wu Jianhua, chief physician, associate professor, master's tutor, deputy director of the Ophthalmology Branch of Hubei Medical Association, deputy leader of the Fundus Disease Group of the Ophthalmology Branch of Hubei Medical Association, director of the Fundus Disease Department, and president of Wuhan University Aier Eye Hospital (Aier Eye Hospital Group Hubei General Hospital), reminded that although blindness caused by "diabetic retinopathy" is irreversible, as long as early screening, timely diagnosis and standardized treatment are carried out, most "diabetic retinopathy" patients can retain their remaining vision. After being diagnosed with diabetes, it is recommended to develop the habit of regular fundus examinations, and not to wait until vision deteriorates before checking. Late-stage treatment is ineffective, expensive, and the chance of restoring good vision is relatively small.
