There is only one real benefit of eating radishes in winter!

There is a saying in China since ancient times that "eat radishes in winter and ginger in summer, and you don't need a doctor's prescription." These days, my family has stewed radish and pork ribs soup for dinner. It is really comfortable to go home and drink a bowl of it after get off work, shivering in the cold wind.
However, why is there always a saying that we should eat radishes in winter?

Carrots are Umbelliferae vegetables, and radishes are cruciferous vegetables.

Radish has high water content, low energy, and medium levels of vitamins and dietary fiber.

It is traditionally believed that eating radish is good in winter. The main reason is that there were fewer vegetables in winter in the past, and radish was a very good vegetable.

With modern food technology, there are many kinds of vegetables that can be chosen and eaten in winter, and radish does not stand out.

The key to nutritional health is to achieve food diversity and a balanced diet.

From the analysis of nutritional data, as an edible vegetable, the nutritional characteristics of radish are mainly:
1. High water content and low calories: The water content of radish is over 90%, and every 100 grams contains about 20 kcal. In the dry winter, eating more foods with high water content is good for replenishing the water needed by the body.

2. High dietary fiber content: Radish contains a lot of dietary fiber, which can increase the feeling of fullness. In addition, the mustard oil contained in radish can promote intestinal peristalsis and help defecation.
3. The vitamin content is quite rich, and it also contains a variety of trace elements: for example, the vitamin C content of radish is at a medium level, and eating more radish is also good for obtaining vitamin C.
However, judging from the nutritional analysis, these nutrients in radish are not outstanding among vegetables.

For example, the vitamin C content in every 100 grams of green pepper is more than 60 mg. The dietary fiber in every 100 grams of peas is also much richer than that in radishes.
In general, radish can be used as a vegetable that provides humans with a variety of nutritional sources, but it is not particularly outstanding.
What are the benefits of eating radish in winter?
There are many health legends about radish among the people. For example, some people say that radish is a small ginseng, "eat radish in winter and ginger in summer, and you won't need a doctor to prescribe medicine", "when radish is on the market, doctors will have nothing to do", etc. Does radish really have such magical effects?
I think one of the important reasons why the saying that radish is good in winter is that there are few vegetables in winter. As a very cold-resistant vegetable, radish is one of the few vegetables that people can eat in winter. In ancient times, eating fresh radish during the long winter was very helpful for people to supplement nutrition, especially vitamin C. Therefore, people at that time thought it was good to eat radish in winter.
However, in modern times, with the development of food technology, especially the advancement of cold chain, fruit and vegetable storage, and fruit and vegetable planting technology, we can eat a variety of vegetables and fruits all year round, and the effect of radish is not so magical.
In fact, although radish has its own nutritional advantages, it does not have any special ingredients. The nutrients contained in radish are also found in many fruits and vegetables, and are also very common. You can also get them by eating other fruits and vegetables. Moreover, if you are really sick, simply eating the several nutrients provided by radish will not achieve a therapeutic effect.
To truly treat a disease, you still need to diagnose and treat the symptoms and causes effectively, so as not to delay the disease and ensure your health. Otherwise, why do we need doctors and medicines? If you are sick, can't you just eat some radishes? !
Scientists have also discovered some possible health benefits from radishes. For example, in recent years, many media reports have mentioned anti-cancer factors such as sulforaphane and glucosinolate.
Some studies have found that these substances have some "anti-oxidation" and "anti-cancer" effects, but most of them were found in some cell and animal experiments. There is not enough evidence in humans, so it is too early to believe that they are effective and can fight cancer in humans.
In general, based on current research evidence, although radishes are delicious, they really have no special health benefits. People should not be too superstitious, and should still see a doctor promptly if they are sick.
Of course, if you like to eat radish, I still support it. After all, the basic concept of nutrition and health lies in dietary diversity and balanced nutrition. As a vegetable, radish can also enrich our diet and is good for increasing food diversity and balanced diet.
