If my child has low myopia, does he need to wear glasses?

My child is young, will he be unable to adapt to wearing glasses?

After wearing glasses, will the degree become higher and higher?

At the optometry center of the Aier Eye Hospital affiliated to Wuhan University, we often hear all kinds of "soul-searching questions" from parents. As the saying goes, worry leads to confusion. Today, with the high myopia rate among children and adolescents, changes in children's vision are always a concern for parents. Coupled with the complexity of information on the Internet, it is easy to fall into misunderstandings if you are not careful.

Myth: If myopia is low, you don’t need to wear glasses!

For children, even if they have only 100 degrees of myopia, they cannot see the blackboard clearly when sitting in the back row of the classroom. If a myopic child does not wear glasses for a long time, the retina will always be blurred. The brain center will use certain compensation mechanisms (such as eye movement adjustment, squinting, tilting the head, etc.) to improve this blurred image and improve vision. In the long run, it will lead to visual fatigue and easily cause the degree of myopia to increase.

Generally speaking, if the child's myopia does not exceed 100 degrees and is not affected when looking far away, you can postpone wearing glasses and have regular checkups;

If a child's myopia exceeds 100 degrees, causing a significant decrease in distance vision and affecting study and life, the child should wear glasses as prescribed by a doctor.

Misconception: Wearing glasses will make myopia worse and you can never take them off again!

Wearing a pair of suitable glasses is of great significance for improving the distance vision of myopic children, restoring the normal function of both eyes, and preventing strabismus and amblyopia. Of course, wearing glasses with inappropriate degrees or substandard quality may accelerate the development of myopia. Standardized medical optometry and glasses fitting can help obtain glasses with appropriate degrees and qualified quality to avoid the above situation.

remind

Zhou Chao, director of the optometry center of the Aier Eye Hospital affiliated to Wuhan University, advises parents that if they notice their children squinting, tilting their heads, looking close together, etc., they must take them to a regular hospital for a check-up in time to ensure early detection and correction of myopia. Parents must not be influenced by the above misunderstandings and avoid seeking medical treatment, which will lead to further development of their children's myopia.
