7-year-old girl suffers from Marfan syndrome and her lens is "out of place"

The girl couldn't see clearly after getting glasses, so she went to the hospital for a check-up and found out that it was Marfan syndrome that caused the lens to shift.

7-year-old Xixi (pseudonym) lives in Huangmei, Hubei. Because her father works away from home, Xixi has been living with her grandmother. This year, Xixi, who is in the first grade of primary school, is tall, so her teacher asked her to sit in the back row of the classroom. However, Xixi couldn't see the blackboard clearly when she sat in the back row. After she went home and told her grandmother, her grandmother thought her granddaughter was nearsighted and took Xixi to a nearby optical shop to get glasses. However, Xixi still couldn't see the blackboard clearly after getting the new glasses.

Later, Xixi's father returned home and took her to the Aier Eye Hospital affiliated to Wuhan University for treatment. After examination, Xixi's lens was obviously displaced and she was eventually diagnosed with bilateral lens dislocation, accompanied by refractive error and amblyopia.

After careful questioning, Dr. Zhou Li, deputy chief physician of the cataract and presbyopia department, discovered that Xixi's eye condition was caused by Marfan syndrome. If not treated promptly with surgery, serious complications such as total dislocation of the lens, secondary glaucoma, uveitis, and retinal detachment may occur.

Considering Xixi's age and future eye needs, conventional intraocular lens suspension surgery was not suitable for Xixi. After consultation with experts, Xixi underwent cataract removal, tension ring suspension, and intraocular lens capsular bag implantation. During the postoperative pupil dilation examination, Xixi's intraocular lens was centered, and the capsular bag was retained, and her eye physiological state was restored.

When she was discharged from the hospital yesterday, Xixi's vision in both eyes had recovered from 0.1 when she came to the hospital to 0.5.

"Cataracts, glaucoma, strabismus, amblyopia and other problems will all manifest as decreased vision, which is similar to the symptoms of myopia." Wang Yong, deputy director of the Cataract Subcommittee of the China Association of Non-Public Medical Institutions and director of the Aier Eye Hospital affiliated to Wuhan University, reminded that if you find that your vision is declining, do not blindly go to the optical shop to get glasses, but go to a professional ophthalmology hospital first to check for related ophthalmic diseases to avoid missing the best treatment time. At the same time, he said that patients with Marfan syndrome usually have poor vision, which tends to become more and more serious with age, and must be treated as soon as possible.
