Will you get glaucoma if you often play with your phone in the dark?

When your eyes feel uncomfortable

Many people think, "Just bear with it and it will pass."

But

Some symptoms you usually ignore

It could be a sign of glaucoma.

After getting angry

After staying up late playing with mobile phone

After overwork

......

Feeling eye pain

For some people

This may be normal

Just take a rest and it will be fine

However, for people with high-risk factors for glaucoma, such as abnormal angle structure, high myopia, and a family history of glaucoma, this swelling and pain may be a sign of glaucoma, and in severe cases may cause blindness.

Finger test

In the absence of a tonometer, how can we determine whether the sudden swelling and pain in the eyes is due to an abnormal increase in intraocular pressure?

Here I will teach you a little trick: "Finger test method" - use two fingers and just two steps to self-test whether our intraocular pressure is too high.

Finger test method - close your eyes, touch your eyeball lightly with your index finger, and feel the fluctuation of your eyeball:

◆ 1. If it is as soft as the lips, then the intraocular pressure is low;

◆ 2. If it is the same hardness as the tip of the nose, then the intraocular pressure is normal;

◆ 3. If it feels as hard as your forehead, then your intraocular pressure is elevated;

Warm reminder: Through this self-test method, you can roughly judge whether the intraocular pressure is normal. Of course, if you feel obvious discomfort, you still need to go to the doctor. Wu Zuohong, a member of the Glaucoma Group of the Hubei Ophthalmology Society and director of the Glaucoma Department of the Aier Eye Hospital affiliated to Wuhan University, reminded that human intraocular pressure is not a constant value. It is not exactly the same at different times of the day. You cannot judge the condition or confirm the diagnosis based on a single intraocular pressure measurement.

What are the symptoms of glaucoma?

1. Nausea and vomiting, eye pain and swelling

When intraocular pressure rises sharply, it can reflexively cause excitement of the vagus nerve and vomiting nerve center, resulting in severe nausea and vomiting. The trigeminal nerve endings are stimulated, reflexively causing pain in the trigeminal nerve distribution area, and patients often feel migraine and eye pain.

2. Narrowing of the visual field and decreased vision

As intraocular pressure gradually increases, the optic nerve is damaged, and vision loss often occurs in the early stages. In the late stages, the visual field becomes narrower, which is also the main symptom of glaucoma.

3. Rainbow Vision

When looking at lights, colorful circles or halos appear around them, similar to the rainbow in the sky after a summer rain. This is medically called iridescence.

When the intraocular pressure rises in glaucoma, the cornea stretches excessively, causing corneal edema and a large number of small blisters appear between the corneal epithelial cells. These small blisters take on the shape of water drops due to gravity, similar to prisms, which refract the light passing through, resulting in iridescence. This is the same reason why a rainbow appears in the sky after rain.

Misconceptions about glaucoma

Myth 1: Good vision doesn’t mean you have glaucoma

Good vision may also be due to glaucoma. Early glaucoma may only manifest as a reduced visual field.

Myth 2: Hyperopia is not prone to glaucoma

People with hyperopia have crowded eyeballs, which makes them more likely to suffer an acute attack of angle-closure glaucoma when they are excited, stay up late, or read in the dark for a long time.

Myth 3: Glaucoma can be cured

Once glaucoma occurs, it cannot be reversed or cured and requires lifelong follow-up and regular examinations.

Treatment of glaucoma

Medication, laser or surgery. The goal of glaucoma treatment is to reduce intraocular pressure, prevent further damage to the optic nerve, and protect visual function. For different types and stages of glaucoma, the treatment plans are different, and personalized treatment is the key!
