Moyamoya disease can easily cause cerebral stroke and is very harmful. What exactly causes moyamoya disease?

Last week, a patient with moyamoya disease came for a follow-up examination in the outpatient clinic. The patient was admitted to the hospital for cerebral infarction five months ago and was diagnosed with moyamoya disease. Two months ago, he underwent a combined vascular bypass surgery. He came for a follow-up examination today and recovered well. During the consultation, the patient asked me, does the good recovery after the operation mean that the moyamoya disease has been cured? Why do people get moyamoya disease?

Moyamoya disease can cause occlusion of large blood vessels in the patient's brain, which can easily lead to cerebral infarction. Large blood vessel occlusion forms compensatory small blood vessels, which are fragile and easy to rupture, leading to bleeding. Affected by hemodynamics, some patients are accompanied by aneurysms, which are prone to cerebral hemorrhage.

Moyamoya disease surgery is a preventive measure. If patients do not undergo moyamoya disease surgery, they may suffer from repeated cerebral infarction and cerebral hemorrhage, which will affect their physical health and reduce their quality of life. For children, repeated cerebral infarction caused by moyamoya disease may lead to problems such as inattention, intellectual decline and hemiplegia. Repeated cerebral hemorrhage in adults may cause dementia, hemiplegia and other problems. Moyamoya disease surgery can improve the patient's brain blood supply and reduce the risk of stroke.

The cause of moyamoya disease is still unclear. It is related to genetic factors, but it is not necessarily inherited. Clinically, there have been cases of siblings and grandparents and grandchildren suffering from the disease, but this is relatively rare. If you are worried about the inheritance of moyamoya disease, after a direct relative is diagnosed with moyamoya disease, the family can go to the neurology department for relevant examinations to rule out the disease.

For patients who have been diagnosed with moyamoya disease, early surgical treatment is recommended. There are three types of surgical treatment: direct revascularization, indirect revascularization, and combined vascular bypass. Surgery can reduce the risk of cerebral hemorrhage and cerebral infarction and improve the patient's quality of life.
