In order to have a good figure, 20-year-old Changsha boy Xiao Wang followed the methods on the Internet to train his abdominal muscles. However, more than a month later, he was hospitalized due to unbearable lower back pain and was diagnosed with lumbar disc herniation.

Xiao Wang found some abdominal muscle training methods on the Internet, including sit-ups and plank support. After a month of fitness, he began to have back pain. He thought it was just muscle soreness at first, but the pain became worse and worse, and he even limped when he walked. Recently, after an examination by the Spine Surgery Department of Hunan Second People's Hospital, Xiao Wang was diagnosed with lumbar disc herniation, which met the surgical indications.

The lumbar disc is under great pressure during the load and movement of the spine, and begins to degenerate after the age of 20, which is the basic cause of lumbar disc herniation. In addition, lumbar disc herniation is also related to trauma, occupation, genetic factors, incorrect exercise posture, pregnancy, coughing, sneezing and other inducing factors.

"It is best to choose a formal place and professional coach for fitness, so as not to cause physical damage without knowing it due to incorrect exercise methods." Wang Jun, deputy chief physician of spine surgery, reminded that the range of leg stretching and waist bending should not be too large during exercise. Patients with lumbar disc herniation should not use sit-ups to exercise abdominal muscles, because repeated flexion of the waist can easily aggravate the disease. It is recommended to choose swimming, plank support, 5-point support, yoga and other methods to exercise abdominal muscles. Lifting the lower limbs while hanging on the horizontal bar is also a good way to exercise abdominal muscles.

Wang Jun also reminded that the lumbar disc should be well protected in daily life from the following aspects:

1. Maintain good living habits to prevent your waist and legs from getting cold and overworked.

2. Pay attention to the correct standing and sitting posture. An incorrect spine will cause uneven force on the intervertebral disc, which is the hidden root cause of intervertebral disc herniation. When standing or sitting, you should keep your chest up and your waist straight. The same posture should not be maintained for too long. Appropriate in-situ activities or waist and back exercises can relieve waist and back muscle fatigue.

3. Do not bend over when lifting heavy objects. You should squat down to pick up the heavy object, and then stand up slowly.
