What was the social hierarchy in ancient Tibet?

The social hierarchy in old Tibet was very strict. The top class was the monks, also known as lamas, followed by the nobles, and the lowest class was serfs and slaves.

The government officials were composed of prominent monks and nobles, who were the ruling class in Tibet. Serfs and slaves were the ruled class and had no political status. The highest religious and secular leader was the Dalai Lama, who held both political and religious power. Before the Dalai Lama took power, political and religious power was in the hands of the regent.

Below the Dalai Lama and the Regent is the government administrative body, called "Kashag" in Tibetan. There are two main offices under the Kashag, one is "Yicang", which means secretariat, and the other is "Zaikang", which means audit office.

Except for the Yicang and Zaikang, officials in various government administrative agencies are composed of monks and laymen, and the same is true for local officials in various kichas and zongs. Other institutions of the Kashag include Majikang, Zhupoliekong, Suolangliekong, Menzikang and other departments. Below the kicha is the zong, and the jurisdiction of the nobles and temple estates is called Xika, which is smaller than the zong and has Xidu. The zongben has a higher rank, and the Xidu has a lower rank.

Tibet's social and political system was strictly hierarchical and ruled by a special theocratic official system, with the vast majority of serfs and slaves having no rights.

Why is Nepal's population larger than Tibet's?

The reason why Nepal has a larger population than Tibet is that Nepal has a larger population and Tibet has a smaller population, mainly because of their different geographical environments. Tibet is located in the north of the Himalayas, and its climatic conditions are not conducive to crop breeding and population growth, so the Tibetan population migrated to surrounding Yunnan, Sichuan, Qinghai, Gansu and other places; while Nepal is located in the south of the mountains. Although its northern part is mainly mountainous, its southern part has many river valleys. In addition, it is under the control of the Indian Ocean monsoon like India, so its natural conditions are actually much stronger than Tibet. This has little to do with the size of the place. Nepal's predecessor, Gorkha, was a vassal state of the Qing Dynasty. Sikkim, annexed by India, formerly Zhemongxiong, was a vassal state of Tibet.
