What is the reason for transparent floating objects in front of the eyes? Why can I see many transparent small dots?

Sometimes we often feel that we can see some small dots or long strips of substances like bacteria in front of our eyes, just like looking at a microscope, and these floating objects will move with our eyeballs. This is actually floaters. Why does this happen?

What causes transparent floating objects in front of eyes?

Seeing these, the most likely reason is that you have physiological eye floaters. Many normal people have physiological eye floaters, and if there is no lesion, it is considered normal and there is nothing wrong with them.

Floaters are caused by the liquefaction and turbidity of the vitreous body in the eye. The typical symptoms are similar to what you described, that is, when you look at something shiny, such as the sun in the sky, you will see those dots, lines, or silks in front of your eyes, some black dots, and some transparent things like the cells you mentioned. Sometimes it looks like a mosquito flying by, and it is not clear if you look closely, but sometimes you can see it with your eyes closed.

Physiological floaters are generally harmless and there is no need to worry. No special treatment is required. Please reduce eye fatigue, adjust your mood, use your eyes scientifically, and look at your phone less.

Severe cases may be pathological floaters. If the lens is deformed, or there are a lot of turbidity or other impurities inside, it means that the eyes are either aging or overuse has caused internal damage. At this time, floaters will be very obvious and need to be treated in the hospital in time. Laser treatment and other drugs can usually be used. Please consult a professional ophthalmologist for details.

Why do we see many transparent dots?

In medicine, this phenomenon is called "floaters". In some cases, when the eyeball is dry due to prolonged use of the eye or excessive rubbing of the eye, it is possible to see what looks like bacteria in front of the eye, because the structure and material of the surface of the eye cause a decrease in light penetration, much like some dirt on a camera.

Due to the different forms of turbid substances, the shapes of black shadows such as black spots, spider webs, tadpoles, snowflakes, filaments, and floating balls are also different.

The human eye is the only visual organ. It is composed of a multi-layer structure with good permeability and refraction to light, including the cornea, lens, and vitreous body. Floaters are related to these light transmission results, mainly to the vitreous body. There are many factors that may cause floaters.

Is there no cure for floaters?

Physiological floaters can generally be divided into three types: congenital, senile and myopic. Based on an ophthalmological examination, there is no need to treat these three types of physiological floaters after diagnosis. However, pathological floaters need to be taken seriously. Pathological floaters are seen in diseases such as retinal tears and retinal detachment, vitreous hemorrhage, and uveitis.

At present, the main treatment for pathological floaters is surgical treatment. Since the visual impairment is mainly caused by vitreous lesions, there is no specific drug available. If the floaters are caused by vitreous hemorrhage, vitreous liquefaction, etc., it is recommended to actively perform vitrectomy, artificial vitreous replacement, etc. In addition, some physical treatment methods can also be used, such as ultrasound, eye patches, and Chinese medicine iontophoresis.

There is no need for any drug treatment for physiological floaters. In daily life, pay attention to diet adjustment, eat more foods rich in vitamin A and carotene, and appropriately supplement reducing agents such as vitamin C and vitamin E to improve the eye's own immune function and prevent vision loss; eat more seafood, unrefined grains, fish, etc., which are good for the eyes. Do not overuse your eyes, and pay attention to rest and massage the eye area.
