40-year-old woman's hands feel numb when sleeping

The arms are controlled by the median nerve, ulnar nerve, and radial nerve. When nerve compression occurs due to carpal tunnel syndrome, cubital tunnel syndrome, tennis elbow, and poor sleeping posture, numbness in the arms may occur. During sleep at night, the blood circulation rate of the whole body slows down, which will further aggravate the ischemia and hypoxia of tissues, and the numbness symptoms will be aggravated.

Carpal tunnel syndrome is caused by edema of the cruciate ligament of the wrist due to frequent labor, which compresses the median nerve and causes numbness of the thumb, ring finger, and middle finger on the palm side of the hand.

Cubital tunnel syndrome is caused by the narrowing of the cubital tunnel at the wrist joint, which compresses the ulnar nerve, and the main manifestation is numbness of the little finger and ring finger of the right hand.

Radial nerve injury is common in tennis elbow and compression due to poor sleeping posture, and the main manifestation is numbness of the thumb, ring finger, and middle finger on the side of the arm.

In addition, cervical spondylosis can also cause numbness in both hands when sleeping at night.

How to relieve numbness in hands when sleeping

1. Don’t worry too much if your hands get numb when you fall asleep. It’s probably because your arms are pressed, causing blood circulation problems. In this case, you can massage your arms more at night, or find a comfortable posture before going to bed. Don’t fall into bed as soon as you fall asleep, otherwise your hands will still be numb when you wake up. In addition, we can also choose a pillow core with a suitable height-to-width ratio. The pillow core needs to be flat so that the neck can rest on it to allow blood to flow smoothly.

2. Some hands numbness is normal. Most of them are due to deficiency of qi and blood. You can increase arm exercises, clench your fists, cross your fingers, relax, and have your family help massage the acupoints on your hands to achieve the purpose of relaxing muscles and activating blood circulation. Carry out 1-2 times a day to effectively relieve numbness in hands caused by poor blood circulation.
