Are hamsters afraid of heat or cold? What are the symptoms of a hamster being overheated?

Hamsters are easy to keep, but they are also relatively fragile. For example, they cannot be exposed to the sun for a long time, or they will get heatstroke; they cannot touch water, or they will get cold. So what are the symptoms of a hamster being overheated?

Do hamsters fear heat or cold?

Everyone will be afraid.

Hamsters are afraid of heat in summer. If cooling measures are not taken, hamsters are likely to suffer from heat stroke. It is recommended to place hamsters in a cool place and give them enough drinking water to avoid heat stroke. Symptoms of hamsters being afraid of heat include slow movements and lack of energy. Once a hamster suffers from heat stroke, the owner needs to relieve the heat immediately, otherwise the hamster is likely to die.

In winter, you should also keep it warm and try not to take it out, because although it has fur, it is not very effective in resisting the cold.

What are the symptoms of a hamster being overheated?

The patient may have shortness of breath, dull eyes, unconsciousness, and be too lazy to move. If touched, the patient may be slow or unresponsive, and the chin or belly may be wet. In severe cases, the patient may be unable to stand and may be in a coma.

When suffering from heat stroke, hamsters will be very excited, running around like crazy, just like a person's last moments of life. To put it in a scary way, within 1-2 minutes after suffering from heat stroke, hamsters will die.

How to relieve heatstroke in hamsters

First, cool down the hamster and immediately put it in the air-conditioned room. It is best to put a towel in the box and put the hamster upward. Use the towel to blow the air up and cover the hamster's abdomen and hands and feet at the same time.

If the cage has a partition, pour water into the partition to cool the cage down. If there is no partition, put ice bags at the bottom of the cage (if you put ice bags, don't put them in often, because ice is much colder than water and Xiaocangcang can't stand it). Note that there should be a layer of cloth in between. The thickness of the cloth is about the thickness of three A4 papers. If it is too cold, Xiaocangcang will catch a cold and have diarrhea.

Use a cotton swab to apply glucose saline to the hamster's mouth. Never use pure water. If the hamster is conscious, it will swallow it subconsciously. If the hamster is unconscious, we have to lift its head and gently push the hamster's mouth to help the liquid enter the intestines.

Replace the sawdust with cat litter, or put wooden boards in the cage. The wooden boards must be smooth, otherwise they will hurt Xiaocangcang's paws. Remember not to put the cage under the sun. Replace the water that Xiaocangcang drinks with mung bean soup. Remember not to feed ice cream or popsicles, which will cause Xiaocangcang to have diarrhea.
