There is a gasoline smell inside the car but not outside. What is the problem? When the car is cold-started, the exhaust pipe smells of gasoline. What's going on?

When a car is started, it will produce exhaust gas, especially in the case of cold start. The exhaust gas of the car will have a gasoline smell, but normally the smell will disappear after a while. What if there is a gasoline smell inside the car but not outside?

There is a gasoline smell inside the car but not outside. What is the problem?

Possible reasons for this situation include:

1. Just after refueling, oil vapor floats in from the car window. This situation has a low risk of hidden danger.

2. There is a leak in the refueling line at the rear of the vehicle, the rear fuel tank inspection port or the carbon canister connection. This situation needs to be checked and repaired.

3. The key is to open the engine hood and check whether the engine oil supply pipeline is leaking. This situation is extremely dangerous and needs to be eliminated in time.

Why does the exhaust pipe smell like gasoline when the car is cold started?

If there is a gasoline smell coming from the exhaust pipe for a few minutes when the car is cold started, it is normal if it disappears after a while.

There are two main reasons for the gasoline smell. One is that in order to make the engine start successfully at one time during cold start, more fuel will be injected during the design to ensure normal start, relying on a rich combustible mixture to ensure normal start. The problem with the mixture is that some of the gasoline is discharged without being completely burned, so there is a gasoline smell.

Another problem is that when the engine water temperature is relatively low, the combustible mixture will also have the problem of incomplete combustion. The combined effect of these two problems causes the smell of gasoline in the exhaust gas.

If there is a constant smell of gasoline, it means that the vehicle is not burning completely. If the vehicle is not burning completely, many problems will occur, such as carbon deposits, reduced power, difficulty starting, body shaking, and soaring fuel consumption.

Is it normal for the exhaust to smell bad when the car is just started?

Generally, it takes about 2 seconds for the engine to start. The sign of a successful start is that the combustion of each cylinder can independently drive the engine to run without the need for a starter. The combustion in the cylinder is not stable within 1-2 seconds after the start, so the mixture will not be completely burned. Therefore, there is a certain amount of unburned gasoline in the exhaust gas. This smell is slightly different from the smell of pure gasoline because it has been heated and mixed with exhaust gas.

After the engine starts, the oxygen sensor needs to be heated up quickly, so the on-board computer will control the delay of ignition to make the mixture burn more slowly, so that the exhaust gas temperature is higher and the oxygen sensor can be heated up quickly. At this time, the exhaust gas composition is different from the exhaust gas after complete combustion, which will also make the exhaust gas smell a certain special odor.

When the engine speed returns to a stable state, there will be no odor, especially when the water temperature reaches the normal value. At this time, the exhaust gas is in the best state and there is almost no particularly obvious odor. Therefore, as long as the water temperature is normal and there is no odor, you don’t have to worry too much.
