Pros and cons of artificial insemination

Pros and cons of artificial insemination

Assisted reproduction can help some infertile patients to have the hope of having a baby again. Artificial insemination is a key aspect of assisted reproduction. Artificial insemination is what we usually call in vitro fertilization. Artificial insemination is different from it. Artificial insemination is a technology that uses non-sexual methods to help the female reproductive system and make her pregnant. Understanding the pros and cons of artificial insemination can help you make a better choice.

Pros and cons of artificial insemination

1. Advantages of artificial insemination:

1. The sperm is lifted and processed before entering the uterine cavity, which can provide a more effective treatment for infertility caused by sperm liquefaction or cervical factors.

2. In vitro fertilization without puncture and egg retrieval is a simple, reasonable and economical method for some infertile patients.

Second, the disadvantages of artificial insemination:

1. Uterine and ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome: Since ovulation induction treatment should be given before artificial insemination, uterine and ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome may occur.

2. Abnormal pregnancy results may be found: the incidence of multiple pregnancies with artificial insemination reaches 20%, ectopic pregnancy is about 2%-8%, and the rate of spontaneous abortion is 20%-30%.

3. Pelvic infection may occur: Since a thin tube is used to inject the elevated semen into the uterus, the chance of uterine and bilateral fallopian tube infection will increase. Bacteria may be introduced during actual operation, and fungal infection may also occur when handling semen.

4. Bleeding and damage: It is mostly caused by difficult intrauterine insertion or rough operation. Therefore, the insemination tube with appropriate hardness and softness should be selected first. The operator should ensure gentleness, stability and accuracy to avoid damaging the cervical canal and uterine wall to cause bleeding, so as not to affect the fertilization effect.

5. Lower abdominal distension and pain: When a couple artificially inseminate fresh semen, if the semen is introduced too quickly or too much, especially if the semen is introduced into the cervix, it can cause cramps and pain in the lower abdomen.

How to choose between artificial insemination and artificial conception

Artificial insemination is a technology that uses non-sexual methods to insert male sperm into the female reproductive system to make her pregnant. It is mainly used to treat male infertility. It includes artificial insemination with husband's semen (AIH) and artificial insemination with donor sperm (AID). If a man has abnormal reproductive organs, such as short penis, hypospadias, impotence, premature ejaculation, etc., or a woman has a narrow cervix or infertility due to unclear reasons, artificial insemination between direct relatives can be used.

Artificial insemination is mainly used for infertility caused by men, such as severe hypospadias, retrograde ejaculation, erectile dysfunction, azoospermia, oligospermia, asthenospermia, and sperm liquefaction. Artificial insemination can also be used for some infertility caused by women, such as uterine cramps, thin cervix, abnormal cervical mucus, poor test results after sexual intercourse, etc. In addition, there are some special cases, such as infertility due to medical immunology, husband and wife are both heterozygous for the same autosomal recessive genetic disease or the man has an autosomal dominant genetic disease, and artificial insemination can also be used.
