Down syndrome screening time

Down syndrome screening time

Because Down syndrome has a huge impact on every family and causes great pressure, if possible, we still need to master the basic knowledge about Down syndrome children, roughly understand what Down syndrome children are and reduce the birth rate of Down syndrome children as much as possible.

1. Down syndrome is a type of Down syndrome. Most children with Down syndrome have severe intellectual disabilities and their IQ is lower than that of ordinary people. Therefore, Down syndrome is also called congenital idiocy. And it is also accompanied by other physical problems. Nearly half of the patients also have secondary complex congenital heart disease, serious internal organ malformations, sepsis and other symptoms. Normal people only have two sex chromosomes 21, but patients with Down syndrome have three sex chromosomes 21, one of which is vacant compared to normal people. It is a chromosomal disease, so Down syndrome is also called trisomy 21 syndrome. Patients with Down syndrome are basically unable to be independent in their daily life, their life expectancy is short, and their average life expectancy is not high.

2. The fertility rate of Down syndrome is closely related to the age of the mother. Down syndrome is a sex chromosome disease. It is the most common and currently known main cause of intellectual disability. As the age of the mother increases, the risk of giving birth to a child with Down syndrome increases and the incidence rate increases. Therefore, prenatal diagnosis of Down syndrome is positive in order to minimize the birth rate of Down syndrome children. Pregnant women with positive screening results must undergo amniocentesis and fetal cell chromosome examination to confirm whether the baby is Down syndrome, thereby preventing the birth of Down syndrome children.

Time for Down syndrome screening

During pregnancy, pregnant women should go for regular physical examinations on time to check whether the fetus is deformed or whether its growth and development are normal. In addition to normal prenatal examinations, mothers will also undergo a Down syndrome screening test. The main purpose of Down syndrome screening is to check whether the fetus has congenital defects, that is, to check whether the fetus has a seriously low IQ. So for the health of the fetus, when should Down syndrome screening be done?

The best time to screen for Down syndrome is between the 15th and 20th week of pregnancy, preferably between the 16th and 18th week, because at this stage the test can be used to predict whether the baby in the belly is likely to suffer from congenital intellectual disability. The main purpose of Down syndrome screening is to prevent the birth of babies with congenital intellectual disabilities.
