What causes nipple pain when breastfeeding?

Nipple pain during exclusive breastfeeding is mostly caused by incorrect breastfeeding posture or feeding habits, which leads to nipple cracking, and then nipple pain and discomfort. At this time, you should develop good breastfeeding habits and postures, apply roxithromycin ointment on the nipples, clean the nipples in time before and after breastfeeding, and keep the nipples clean. In addition, if there is milk stasis, subacute mastitis is likely to occur, which is a subacute suppurative infection of the breast, mainly manifested by breast swelling accompanied by severe pain. When the pain spreads to the nipple, nipple pain may also occur accompanied by overflow of purulent fluid.

At this time, cephalosporin antibiotics should be used for anti-infection treatment, and the patient should immediately go to the breast surgery or general surgery department of a regular hospital for surgical treatment. The surgical treatment method is mostly based on breast cyst incision and drainage. When nipple pain occurs during breastfeeding, you must seek medical attention immediately and cooperate closely with your doctor for treatment to prevent the symptoms from getting worse.

If the nipple pain is intermittent, and the pain starts before menstruation, worsens before menstruation, or eases after menstruation, and is a swollen or stabbing pain, sometimes involving the armpits or shoulders in the same direction, this type of consideration is likely to be caused by breast hyperplasia. If the nipple continues to be extremely painful, you should consider whether you have acute breast infection. If the nipple pain is accompanied by persistent discharge, you need to pay attention to the possibility of malignancy; if the nipple pain occurs during breastfeeding, it should be related to the baby biting the nipple, causing nipple cracks.

There are two possibilities for nipple pain. One is the disease of nipple skin and soft tissue, such as nipple chapped nipple, nipple infection and so on. This condition usually occurs on one side and is accompanied by swelling or discharge from the nipple. Oral anti-inflammatory drugs such as amoxicillin capsules are needed, and erythromycin ointment is applied to the nipples to relieve the pain. The other is nipple pain caused by breast hyperplasia space-occupying lesions. This type of situation often causes pain in both nipples, and rarely only in one side. The pain is intermittent and the nipple shape does not change.
