Normal range of amniotic fluid depth at 36 weeks

If the baby wants to grow and develop healthily, it must have enough amniotic fluid. The amniotic fluid is like a swimming pool for the baby, where the baby can play happily. The main components of amniotic fluid are the mother's and the baby's urine. The amniotic fluid index is actually directly related to the baby's health. If the amniotic fluid index is abnormal, it may indicate that the child's health is at risk.

Amniotic fluid index at 36 weeks of pregnancy

1. Amniotic fluid of pregnant women refers to the fluid in the amniotic cavity of the uterus during pregnancy. Throughout the pregnancy process, it is an essential ingredient to keep the fetus alive. The source of amniotic fluid varies during the different development stages of the fetus. In the early stages of pregnancy, the amniotic fluid of the pregnant woman mainly comes from the plasma components of the embryo; later, as the organs of the embryo begin to develop, other things such as the fetal urine, respiratory tract, digestive tract, fetal umbilical cord, embryonic surface, etc., also become sources of amniotic fluid.

2. Amniotic fluid index: The uterus is divided into four quadrants: upper left, upper right, lower left and lower right. The sum of the vertical depths of the larger dark areas of amniotic fluid in the four quadrants is AFL. If the AFL exceeds 24cm, it is diagnosed as polyhydramnios. If the AFL is between 18-24cm, it is abnormal polyhydramnios or too much amniotic fluid. Under normal pregnancy conditions, the production and absorption of amniotic fluid in pregnant women are in a stable balance, and polyhydramnios means that the amount of amniotic fluid in pregnant women exceeds 200b250l during pregnancy. If the amniotic fluid flow increases slowly, the symptoms are usually mild and are called chronic polyhydramnios; if the amniotic fluid of a pregnant woman increases rapidly within a few days and the compression symptoms are more serious, it is called subacute polyhydramnios.

3. The incidence of polyhydramnios is about 1%-3%. A moderate amount of amniotic fluid flow can protect the fetus and the pregnant mother, but when the amniotic fluid flow is excessive, the incidence of complications in both mother and child increases. Therefore, pregnant women need to pay attention to the condition of their amniotic fluid during pregnancy, and seek medical attention immediately if any abnormality is found. It is normal for the amniotic fluid index to reach 10-18cm in the late pregnancy. During a normal pregnancy, the amniotic fluid flow increases with the number of weeks of pregnancy, and begins to slowly decrease in the last 2 to 4 weeks. At full-term pregnancy, the amniotic fluid flow is about 100b250l (800-1200ml).
