1. When the mother's blood type is O, the father's blood type is A, B or AB, and the fetus's blood type is A or B, it is because the mother and daughter's blood types are incompatible. For example, if the mother is type O blood and the child is type A blood, the mother's body has type O blood cells and her blood contains antigens that are against type "A" blood cells. Through the embryo, the mother's anti-"A" antigens enter the baby's body and react with the A antigens in the baby's type A blood cells, thus causing hemolysis.

2. Incompatible blood types of mother and daughter do not necessarily lead to hemolytic disease. The incidence of ABO blood type incompatibility is about 20%, but the actual incidence of neonatal hemolytic disease is only less than 5%. From another blood type classification, if the mother is RH negative, the father is RH positive, and the fetus is RHA positive, then the mother and daughter are incompatible in blood type, but the probability of RH blood type incompatibility is lower.

2. How to prevent hemolytic disease

Hemolytic disease usually occurs in mothers who have had a threatened miscarriage in early pregnancy or who are pregnant with their second child. If a woman who has a history of unexplained fetal death, miscarriage, or severe neonatal jaundice plans to have a baby again, she and her husband should conduct an ABO blood type test in advance to test the body's anti-A and anti-B antigen status. This test is called an IgG antibody titer test.
