Reasons for high urine specific gravity in women

Almost everyone has had a urine test, which is a basic routine physical examination item and an important part of assessing the health of the body's kidney function. Pregnant women must also do routine urine tests during pregnancy. A high urine specific gravity is a common problem in urine tests. What is the reason for a high urine specific gravity in routine urine tests?

What is the reason for high urine specific gravity in urine routine examination?

The standard value range of urine specific gravity is 1005-1030. Most drinking water can be lower than 1.003, and less water can exceed 1.030. The height depends on the extraction function of kidney function, which is directly proportional to the concentration of substances contained in urine and inversely proportional to urination. Increased urine extraction is common in acute nephritis, proteinuria, diabetes, high fever, sweating, dehydration, etc. A decrease indicates decreased renal extraction function, which is common in diabetes insipidus, chronic nephritis, neurogenic polydipsia and polyuria. The simplicity is slightly low, everything else is normal, maybe I drank too much water, don't worry. It is recommended to use the first urine in the morning for follow-up examination. If it is more than 1.020, it means that the renal extraction function is normal. It is not impossible to check urine during special periods. Try to keep it clean. When collecting urine, don't collect urine from the front end, but the middle part. If you are not sure, go to the hospital first and check it out.

Urine specific gravity is accurately measured to estimate the extraction effect of kidney function, but its accuracy is poor and is affected by many factors. The measurements are for reference only. The normal 24-hour urine specific gravity is between 1.010 and 1.025. The ratio is related to the water inflow rate. The more water inflow, the lower the urine specific gravity. For a normal person, the ratio of the first morning urine after a night of abstinence should be greater than or equal to 1.018. A urine specific gravity less than 1.014 when the urine is oliguric indicates a lack of renal extraction, possibly renal failure.

Urine Test FAQs

1. When testing urine, take no less than 10ml of urine.

2. It is generally required that urine samples from women be collected during the menstrual period to prevent female secretions from seeping into the urine and affecting the test results.

3. It is best to collect urine from the central area. Many kidney disease patients have asked, why do we have to purposefully collect urine from the middle area during urine testing? According to the order of urination, the urine can be divided into the front, middle and back sections. Because the front urine and the back urine are easily contaminated by the environment, the middle urine is usually collected for routine urine examination and urine intestinal bacteria examination.

4. Clean and dry containers should be used to collect urine, i.e. disposable urine cups and urine test tubes provided by hospitals.

5. The retained urine should be sent to the laboratory for examination as soon as possible, because if it is left for too long, problems such as glucose being dissolved by bacteria, tubular damage, and cell melting may occur, affecting the accuracy of the test results.
