Late lochia is brown and smells fishy

Late lochia is brown and smells fishy

Lochia is a common phenomenon among female friends after giving birth. After giving birth, many women should pay attention to personal hygiene and use regular brand sanitary napkins to relieve lochia. Lochia is usually a large amount of blood and a small amount of blood clots. The color is mainly bright red and can be completely eliminated within about one month after delivery. Why is the lochia in the later stage brown and has a fishy smell?

The lochia of parturient women has a peculiar smell and is brown in color. Most of the time, it is caused by puerperal infection, which can easily lead to endometritis and myometritis. The mother will also experience fever, lower abdominal pain and increased lochia. The lochia will be darker in color and very turbid.

After a woman has just given birth, the lochia will contain a lot of blood and blood clots, so for 3 or 4 days after delivery, the lochia will be bright red in color, which is called bloody lochia. Many women who have just given birth will suddenly experience a lot of blood flowing out of their reproductive tract when they get up. This is a normal phenomenon and there is no need for mothers to worry too much.

After giving birth, women should maintain good hygiene. If the lochia is not cleaned up in time or unclean sanitary napkins are used, the lochia will easily become smelly. Some mothers not only have lochia with a foul odor, but also experience symptoms such as abdominal pain and fever. This is generally a sign of postpartum infection and requires timely medical treatment.

How long does it take for the lochia to clear up after a normal birth?

Generally speaking, the discharge will be completed in about one month after the birth of a new mother, but for a small number of people it will continue until the first menstruation. In the first week after discharge, the amount of stool is mostly red. After a week, the amount of stool gradually decreases and turns into brown. After 10 days, the color turns white and the fishy smell gradually fades.

Lochia is also divided into different situations:

1. Blood type lochia

This is the red discharge that comes out after delivery. It contains blood, a small amount of fetal membrane and necrotic decidua, and is accompanied by blood clots. Generally speaking, it lasts about 4 days, after which the color will gradually become lighter and the amount of discharge will also decrease.

2. White lochia

The excreted fluid is white and contains many white blood cells, mostly necrotic tissue decidua. Generally speaking, it can be completely discharged in three weeks.

3. Lochia

It usually appears one week after delivery. The amount of blood will gradually decrease, and the serous components will increase, which are mostly bacteria, cervical mucus, necrotic deciduous tissue, etc., and lasts for about ten days.

Precautions during lochia after normal delivery:

1. Diet.

Mothers who have given birth naturally are relatively weak and need proper nutritional supplements. At this time, you can drink more brown sugar water to help eliminate lochia.

2. Keep warm.

Clothing and bedding should not be too warm to avoid aggravating symptoms.

3. Air

To facilitate the recovery of the body's qi and blood, but avoid convection wind. Mothers should be encouraged to get up and move around early to help circulate qi and blood, so that any remaining blood stasis in the uterus can be discharged as soon as possible.

In short, it is normal for lochia to occur within one month after a normal delivery, and it is also normal for it to fluctuate within this range for a week. But if it exceeds this range, you should be vigilant. It is recommended that women who have given birth normally pay attention to various matters during the lochia period.
