What should I do if I took a lot of medicine for an unexpected pregnancy?

Since many men and women do not take proper contraceptive measures during sexual intercourse, there are many people in modern society who suffer from unexpected pregnancies. But everyone should know that you cannot take medicine blindly after pregnancy, mainly because most medicines contain a large amount of hormones, and taking such medicines will affect the normal development of the fetus. But what should I do if I get pregnant unexpectedly and have taken a lot of medicine?

What should you do if you have taken medicine before an unexpected pregnancy? Can you still keep the child? It depends on two things.

Look at the drug grade

Nowadays, drugs are divided into five levels: A, B, C, D, and X according to their teratogenicity to the fetus. Among them, grade AB drugs have been clinically proven to be harmless to the fetus and can be taken during pregnancy. Drugs such as vitamin A and vitamin D belong to Class A, while drugs such as penicillin and erythromycin belong to Class B. Class C drugs have only been found to be harmful to animal embryos during experiments and have not been confirmed in human studies, so the pros and cons need to be weighed when using them. Class D and X drugs have obvious teratogenic effects on the fetus and are absolutely banned drugs.

Check the time to take medicine

The moment the sperm and egg combine, pregnancy occurs. The fertilized egg then implants in the uterus, cells begin to divide, and the fetus begins to develop. Therefore, to determine whether a drug has a teratogenic effect on the fetus, it is mainly necessary to see whether the fetus is affected during the critical period of development.

The first week after fertilization: Because the fertilized egg has not yet fully implanted, there is no embryo at all, let alone any impact on the embryo. If you take medicine at this time, there is no problem.

The second week after fertilization: This week is when the fertilized egg implants and begins to differentiate into an embryo. At this time, the embryo is highly sensitive to external stimuli. If you take medicine during this period and it affects the fetus, it will be aborted automatically; if it is still fine, it means the medicine has no effect on it, and you can keep it with peace of mind.

So if you find out you are pregnant after taking the medicine, check that you took the medicine within the first two weeks after fertilization. Don't worry, just keep the fetus.

Three to eight weeks after fertilization: This is the critical period when the embryo begins to differentiate into various organs. This period is very susceptible to teratogenic effects from drugs and the environment. At this time, even drugs with high safety should be taken in small doses, not to mention those of grades C, D, and X.

How to calculate the time of fertilization

To sum up, the key issue is to accurately calculate the time of fertilization. Because the egg stays in the body for one to two days after being released, the time of fertilization is almost the same as the day of ovulation. Just learn to calculate the ovulation day. If your menstruation is regular, your ovulation day is 14-16 days before your next menstrual period.
