Do pregnant women feel umbilical cord prolapse?

The umbilical cord is the important bridge connecting the baby and the mother. If there is an accident with the bridge, it will be painful for both the baby and the mother. So, what do pregnant women feel when umbilical cord prolapse occurs?

If the fetal umbilical cord falls out of the vagina, the pregnant woman often has a history of something falling out. Many pregnant women are very sensitive to this feeling, so when umbilical cord prolapse occurs, the mother is often the first to discover it.

If the presenting part has entered the pelvis and the placenta has ruptured, the fetal umbilical cord will be pressed between the presenting part and the pelvis, causing fetal intrauterine hypoxia. The fetal heart rate will definitely change or even disappear completely. Head presentation is the most serious and shoulder presentation is the lightest. Due to the initial hypoxia of the fetus in the uterus, the fetal movement is often frequent, and the pregnant woman feels that the fetal movement is active. When the fetal heartbeat stops and the fetus dies in the uterine cavity, the pregnant woman feels that the fetal movement decreases and disappears quickly.

Umbilical cord prolapse has little impact on pregnant women, it only increases the surgical yield rate, but it is very harmful to the fetus. When the umbilical cord prolapses, the fetal umbilical cord is stressed between the presenting part and the pelvis, causing acute fetal oxygen deficiency, changes in fetal heart rate, or even complete collapse. If the umbilical cord blood circulation system is blocked for more than 7 minutes, intrauterine fetal death may occur.

If a pregnant woman gives birth at home and her amniotic fluid breaks and the amniotic fluid is discharged, and she finds that the umbilical cord has fallen out, she should quickly turn to the knee-chest position, call 120 for help, and maintain the knee-chest position during the process of waiting to be transferred to the hospital. In the ambulance, there may be potential safety risks for pregnant women to use the knee-chest position. It is recommended to use the Sims position, that is, the pregnant woman sleeps on her left side with the pillow placed under her left hip.

In general, umbilical cord prolapse is a unhappy thing for both mother and baby, so mothers should learn the emergency solutions when umbilical cord prolapse really occurs. I also wish all mothers a successful pregnancy and delivery.
