Is it good for a woman to clench her teeth when sleeping?

Some female friends tend to clench their teeth when they sleep, but they are not aware of it, which makes this situation become more and more obvious. This is actually very bad for their body. It will affect their oral health and prevent them from entering deep sleep, thus causing sleep disorders. This is very unfavorable for a healthy life.

The most serious harm is nocturnal clenching of teeth and grinding of teeth. Nocturnal bruxism is common among children. Although nocturnal bruxism may not cause any temporary pain, it can cause severe wear of the occlusal and adjacent surfaces of the teeth in the long run, and may lead to the various complications mentioned above. Intractable bruxism can lead to destruction of periodontal tissues, loose or displaced teeth, gingival recession, and loss of alveolar bone. During the day, we chew food and our teeth rub against each other, but this rarely causes damage to the teeth. This is because when chewing, the food between the upper and lower teeth is like a cushion, and there is also sufficient saliva to make the teeth lubricated, so they are not easily worn.

When eating, it seems that you chew for a long time, but most of the time is spent in up and down movements. Some studies have shown that the actual direct tooth contact lasts only about 4 minutes. If you grind your teeth at night, the situation is quite different. There is no food in your mouth and the secretions in your mouth are reduced. Your teeth do not get the necessary lubrication, resulting in "dry grinding", just like pushing an empty millstone. This will cause great wear on the teeth and have serious consequences. The worn teeth will often become sour or painful to varying degrees, and may sometimes cause temporomandibular joint dysfunction, as the morphology and function of the dental occlusal system are destroyed.

It can also cause abnormalities in the function of the masticatory muscles, such as hyperfunction of the masticatory muscles, spasms, fatigue, pain, etc. Unbalanced muscle contraction, abnormal occlusion, changes in the vertical height between the jaws, and imbalance in the position of the disc and process also directly affect the normal shape and function of the temporomandibular joint, manifesting as symptoms such as pain in the mandibular joint, joint clicking, and limited mouth opening. The pain is compressive and dull, and is particularly noticeable when getting up in the morning. People who grind their teeth at night will disturb the sleep of others.

In addition, long-term bruxism may cause a series of complications. For example, the masticatory muscles cannot get rest, causing fatigue and pain in the masticatory muscles and cheek pain; in severe cases, it can cause headaches, neck and back pain, etc. It can also lead to decreased sleep quality, memory loss, bad breath or bad odor in the mouth, damage to hearing and taste, and some patients with severe bruxism can have an asymmetrical face (usually one side of the face is large and the other side is small), leading to psychological depression, pessimism, and even suicide.

Many severe patients also have gastrointestinal disorders, constipation, decreased sleep quality, fatigue, lack of energy, lack of interest in things, etc., especially because teeth grinding affects the quality of sleep, and they are more easily tired during work or study during the day, so it is important to pay attention to it.
