Pregnant women should use Chinese medicine with caution

Pregnant women should use Chinese medicine with caution

After you become pregnant, you should be careful not to eat anything carelessly, especially when taking medication, because incorrect use of medication can lead to miscarriage and even affect the baby's development. During pregnancy, the uterus is needed to maintain the healthy development of the baby, so if you accidentally get sick at this time, you need to go to the hospital to consult a doctor for the health of mother and child, because only in this way can you get regular treatment.

Which Chinese medicines should pregnant women be prohibited from using or use with caution?

If pregnant women take medication improperly during pregnancy, it will affect their health and even cause miscarriage; some drugs can also affect the growth and development of the fetus through the placenta. Ancient doctors have long emphasized this and have specially compiled a "Song of Medication During Pregnancy", listing dozens of Chinese medicines that pregnant women should avoid, dividing them into two categories: prohibited and cautious.

Pregnant women are prohibited from using Chinese medicine

Pregnant women should not take highly toxic drugs, such as blister beetle, euphorbia, croton, morning glory, pokeweed, aconite, sapodilla, arisaema, etc., to avoid endangering the safety of mother and child.

Pregnant women should not take laxatives, such as Glauber's salt, rhubarb, and senna; or strong medicines, such as leeches, horseflies, musk, and shanshan, which should also be avoided. Because most of these Chinese medicinal materials can cause congestion in the uterus and pelvic cavity and enhance uterine contractions, which can easily cause miscarriage.

Chinese medicine used with caution during pregnancy

Pregnant women should not take peach kernel, safflower, and madder which can promote menstruation and remove blood stasis, immature bitter orange which can promote qi and break up stagnation, aconite which is very pungent and hot, dried ginger, cinnamon, and pinellia which have a lubricating effect, as well as superbus, akebia, and tongcao which have a lubricating effect. They should all be used with caution. In addition, Chinese medicines such as Achyranthes bidentata, Corydalis yanhusuo, Paeonia suffruticosa, ochre, Coix seed, and bezoar should also be used with caution.

Traditional Chinese medicine reminds us that some Chinese patent medicines actually contain some Western medicines for antipyretics and analgesia, which can cause harm if taken carelessly. From this we can see that pregnant women should be cautious whether taking Chinese medicine, Western medicine, or a combination of Chinese and Western medicine. Try not to use medication if possible. If medication is really necessary, use it under the guidance of a doctor.
