How to identify spots on the face

Classification of pigmentation

According to the depth of pigmentation, it can be divided into the following three categories, all of which can be removed with laser. Here we focus on several common spots: freckles, coffee spots and chloasma.

1. Shallow spots - freckles

Freckles are an autosomal dominant hereditary disease with a higher incidence in Asians and Caucasians.

2. Shallow spots - coffee spots

Single café au lait spots are generally just a cosmetic problem and do not pose any health risks. Multiple café-au-lait spots are relatively complex. They may be simple café-au-lait spots or they may be a manifestation of systemic diseases. For example, more than 90% of patients with neurofibroma have café-au-lait spots.

3. Mixed spots - chloasma

Chloasma is also known as "liver spots". The skin lesions of chloasma are pigmented spots ranging from the size of a fingertip to a coin or palm. They are yellowish brown to dark brown in color, with distinct or blurred boundaries. Adjacent ones tend to merge. They usually occur symmetrically on the face, especially on the cheeks, forehead, nose, lips and chin.
