How long does it take for the lochia to clear up after an abortion? Normal lochia is clinically divided into three types: bloody lochia, serous lochia and white lochia.

1. Bloody lochia

Bloody lochia is usually discharged within 1-4 days after the abortion. It is large in amount and bright red in color. Its main components include blood, decidual tissue and mucus. Its appearance is very similar to menstruation. The amount of menstruation is larger than normal, and some of it is accompanied by blood clots.

2. Serous lochia

Serous lochia is usually discharged within 4-6 days after surgery. It is light red in color and contains a small amount of blood, mucus and more vaginal secretions, some of which are accompanied by bacteria.

3. White lochia

White lochia is usually discharged about a week after the abortion. It is white or light yellow in color and contains a large number of white blood cells, decidual cells and bacteria. Its properties are the same as those of leucorrhea, but the amount is larger than normal leucorrhea.

Causes of post-abortion lochia

1. Tissue residue

If the patient has uterine malformation, uterine fibroids and other diseases, or if the surgical operation is improper, the pregnancy tissue may not be completely removed and thus remain in the uterine cavity. At this time, the patient will not only have lochia but also have intermittent abdominal pain.

2. Uterine infection

Taking a bath in a tub within a short period of time after an abortion, having sex too early, or failing to do a good job of hygiene and cleaning can all cause uterine infection. At this time, the patient's lochia is accompanied by a certain odor, there is pain when pressing the abdomen, and the patient also has symptoms such as fever.

3. Uterine contractions

Insufficient rest after abortion or physical weakness can easily lead to uterine atony, which can also cause lochia to continue.
