How long does it take to recover from a cesarean section?

With the advancement of medical technology and the improvement of hospital standards, giving birth is no longer as difficult for modern women as it was before. Whenever I hear women giving birth on TV screaming and sweating profusely, I feel terrified. But now mothers can choose to have a caesarean section before giving birth. As the name suggests, a caesarean section is to take the baby out of the belly, which can greatly reduce the pain of childbirth. So when will the uterus recover after a caesarean section?

How long does it take for the uterus to recover after a cesarean section?

Normally, after a caesarean section, the uterus will return to its normal size in about four weeks. After the placenta is expelled, the uterus will contract immediately. You can feel a hard and spherical uterine body in the abdomen with your hands. Its highest point is at the same level as the navel. In the future, the height of the fundus of the uterus will decrease by 1-2 cm every day. About 10-14 days after delivery, the uterus will become smaller and descend into the small pelvic cavity. After giving birth, some women's cervix becomes very soft due to congestion and edema. The cervical wall is also very thin and wrinkled like a cuff. It will take 7 days for it to return to its original shape. The internal cervix will close after 7-10 days. Until about 4 weeks after delivery, the uterus will be further squeezed and the blood clots will be continuously discharged, and the volume of the uterus will slowly shrink and gradually return to normal.

How to promote the recovery of the uterus after cesarean section

1. Breastfeeding after childbirth

When you breastfeed your baby, the sucking stimulation of the baby will reflexively cause uterine contractions, thereby promoting uterine recovery.

And it is very beneficial to the baby's growth and development.

2. Get out of bed and move around as soon as possible

After delivery, if physical condition permits, the mother should be able to sit up after fatigue is eliminated, and get out of bed and move around the next day. This is beneficial to the recovery of the body's physiological functions and physical strength, and helps the uterus recover and discharge lochia. When resting in bed, try to lie on your left or right side and avoid lying on your back to prevent the uterus from tilting retroverted. If the uterus has already tilted retroverted, you should do the knee-chest position to correct it.

3. Urinate promptly after delivery

If you feel the urge to urinate after giving birth, you should urinate as soon as possible, because if you hold it in, your bladder will over-inflate or be in a frequently swollen state, which will affect the recovery of the uterus.

4. Pay attention to genital hygiene

The hygiene of the genitals should also be taken seriously by the mother to avoid causing genital tract inflammation and further affecting the recovery of the uterus.

The time for uterine recovery is not absolute. It will vary due to the different physical conditions of each mother. A difference of a few days or a week or two is normal, but if the uterus does not recover after delivery, you should go to the hospital to find out the reason.
