What should girls do if they have too much body hair?

There is a big difference in the body hair between men and women. Because men generally have higher levels of male hormones in their bodies, their hair is more abundant. For example, men are more likely to grow beards and have sweat hair all over their bodies. This is a normal phenomenon, but if women have too much body hair, it will seriously affect their appearance. This problem should also be taken seriously. It is best to go to the hospital to check the hormones in the body and take reasonable solutions under the guidance of a doctor.

Treatment of the cause

Excessive hair growth is often a manifestation of systemic disease on the skin, so it is necessary to find the primary disease and treat it accordingly. Some of the diseases are congenital or hereditary, and there is currently no appropriate treatment. If the cause is suspected to be medication, the medication should be discontinued. If a tumor is found, whether it is an ovarian or adrenal tumor, it should be removed if possible. If it cannot be removed, chemotherapy or radiotherapy should be given. If it is Cushing's disease, pituitary tumor resection, radiotherapy, subtotal adrenalectomy, etc. can be performed.

Topical treatments

Shaving is the simplest way to temporarily remove hair. It is often misunderstood that the more you shave, the faster and thicker the hair will grow. In fact, this is not the case. However, most women cannot accept this because it will leave short stubble that will grow again soon.

You can also try depilatories, which can have a similar effect to shaving. You can choose to use hair plucking paste, hair plucking wax, realgar lime paste, etc. as appropriate. After hair removal, apply cortisone emulsion and zinc oxide mud for 1 to 2 days, but hair can regenerate after loss.

In addition, electrolysis can be used. Electrolytic destruction of hair follicles is a permanent method of hair removal. It is safe and effective, but cumbersome and expensive. It can be used in conjunction with drug treatment, but may cause scars.

Laser hair removal: treatment using ruby, laser or YAG laser. It destroys hair follicles primarily through thermal damage. Side effects include local redness, swelling, erythema, ecchymosis, and pigmentation.

Drug treatment

Drug treatment can gradually turn terminal hair back into vellus hair, solving the problem of excessive hair growth, but drugs often cannot cure excessive hair growth, so long-term medication may be required to prevent recurrence. The following are some commonly used drugs.

Estrogen and progesterone therapy is the first choice for the treatment of ovarian hair excess. Most patients with excessive hair growth are associated with excess androgen caused by a stable state of anovulation, so the treatment is to break this stable state. If the patient wishes to become pregnant, ovulation should be induced, and drugs such as clomiphene, HMG, FSH, and Gn-RH can be used. If pregnancy is not desired, progesterone therapy to suppress LH can be used, because the androgen production of the ovaries of women with excessive hair is dependent on LH. If oral contraceptives containing estrogen and progestin are used, the effect will be better, because not only can progestin inhibit LH, but estrogen can also increase SHBG and reduce free testosterone, and progesterone also inhibits the activity of 5α-reductase in the skin. Preparations containing levonorgestrel, desogestrel, etc. are more effective. For example, Marvelon contains 150μg desogestrel and 30μg ethinyl estradiol (ethinyl estradiol), which is very effective.

If there are contraindications to oral contraceptives or if you do not want to use them, you can give medroxyprogesterone acetate (150 mg intramuscularly once every 3 months); or take 30 mg orally every day. Slightly less effective than birth control pills. It reduces SHBG and slightly increases free testosterone.

Drug treatment generally takes a long time to take effect, and it often takes 6 months to achieve satisfactory results. If it can be combined with physical methods, more ideal results can be achieved. It is generally believed that it can be suspended after 1 to 2 years to observe whether ovulation resumes. If ovulation occurs, treatment should be stopped. If ovulation still does not occur, androgen suppression can continue for 6 months to 2 years, but the disease will often relapse eventually. It is best to repeat the medication before relapse.
