Will hyperthyroidism affect pregnancy?

Hyperthyroidism is a disease of endocrine abnormalities. Generally, if hyperthyroidism is not treated early, it will affect women's fertility. Sometimes, even if they are pregnant, it will affect the normal development of the baby. Patients with hyperthyroidism need to go to a regular hospital for examination and treatment in time, and then actively cooperate with the doctor for treatment. It is best for patients with hyperthyroidism to get pregnant after the hyperthyroidism is cured. They also need to pay more attention to follow-up examinations.

After hyperthyroidism patients become pregnant, they need to pay attention to the following points:

1. Go to the hospital for check-up on time to clearly understand the growth rate and development status of the fetus in the uterus to prevent the occurrence of gestational hypertension.

2. Patients with mild hyperthyroidism generally do not need antithyroid drug treatment during pregnancy, because the drugs will penetrate the placenta and affect the thyroid function of the fetus; patients with severe hyperthyroidism need to continue antithyroid treatment, but the dosage must be strictly controlled, and the dosage should be gradually reduced in the late pregnancy.

3. Thyroidectomy cannot be performed during pregnancy as it may easily cause miscarriage or premature birth.

4. After delivery, the chance of recurrence of hyperthyroidism is relatively high, and thyroid drug treatment can be appropriately resumed; if the condition is serious, breastfeeding is not allowed because the drug will be absorbed by the baby through breast milk.

5. After delivery, the baby should undergo various thyroid function tests.

What are the dangers of hyperthyroidism?

1. It causes goiter, eye lesions, etc., among which goiter is the most common symptom of hyperthyroidism; eye lesions include bulging eyeballs, inability to close eyes tightly, double vision, etc., and severe cases can lead to blindness.

2. It causes metabolic abnormalities, such as diabetes, liver dysfunction, etc. The manifestation of liver dysfunction is liver enlargement, and in severe cases it can cause jaundice.

3. Damage to the digestive system, causing gastrointestinal dysfunction diseases such as abdominal distension and abdominal pain. It can also cause liver cell necrosis, liver enlargement, gastrointestinal disorders, elevated transaminase, etc. The patient will become extremely thin.

4. Cause mental disorders. Hyperthyroidism patients are easily excited and often lose their temper. They are very neurotic in life and often suffer from irritability, schizophrenia, and depression, which affect their communication with others.

5. Affect the hematopoietic system, causing diseases such as tachycardia, angina pectoris, myocardial infarction, hypertension, arrhythmia, etc.

6. Affects the reproductive system. Women with hyperthyroidism have irregular menstruation, infertility rate, premature birth rate, miscarriage rate, etc. much higher than normal women, while men suffer from decreased libido and impotence.

7. Affects bones, such as osteoporosis, subperiosteal bone formation, subperiosteal bone swelling, etc.

8. Affects the motor system, such as muscle weakness, muscle atrophy, etc.

9. Mild hyperthyroidism will affect work and study, while severe hyperthyroidism will cause thyroid crisis, systemic failure, and even death.
