Will my milk supply decrease during menstruation?

After a girl gives birth to a baby, she will feed the baby through breast milk. Breast milk is rich in nutrients that can ensure the healthy growth of the baby. However, after girls resume ovulation, they will have their periods again, and during menstruation, the amount of milk will decrease a lot. Mothers are very troubled and worry that their babies are not full. Moreover, they cannot meet their nutritional needs and can only do so through complementary foods. So, what is the reason for decreased milk supply during menstruation?

1. Ensure sufficient stimulation

The secretion of milk is actually proportional to the frequency of breastfeeding. The baby's sucking is the most effective way to stimulate milk secretion. Through sufficient stimulation, the baby's sucking will send signals to the mother's body. This is actually the same as the natural reaction of the body after we exercise more. The instinct of breast milk is to produce on demand. As long as you tell your body that you need to increase the amount of milk, you will produce more milk in about three days.

Similarly, if the mother rarely breastfeeds, when she wants to breastfeed her baby later, there is a high possibility that the amount of breast milk will be insufficient and the baby will not be full.

2. Use supplementary feeding

If the amount of breast milk is indeed insufficient, it is recommended to stick to breastfeeding as much as possible, and then add formula after the breast milk is finished. This feeding method is called supplementary feeding. Its purpose is to stimulate the secretion of breast milk as much as possible and give the mother more opportunities to exercise.

3. Selective food supplements

In terms of diet, you should eat more protein-rich foods and vegetables, pay attention to calcium and iron supplementation, and an appropriate amount of liquid supplementation is also beneficial to the secretion of breast milk. For soups, pig trotter peanut soup is recommended. Moms who like desserts can try rice wine eggs.

4. Be in a good mood every day

Maintain an optimistic attitude and allow mothers and babies to have more close contact. Studies have shown that mothers who are separated from their babies have an average daily milk output of nearly 400 ml less than mothers who have close contact with their babies.

5. Don’t take medication lightly

When mom is sick, you can't just take medicine according to your symptoms. Don't take medicine casually. Before taking medicine, you must consult a doctor and ask which medicines you can take and which medicines you should take less, because some medicines will reduce breast milk secretion and may also cause other adverse reactions.

The body of a mother who is breastfeeding after giving birth is still relatively fragile. To give a simple example of medicine that cannot be taken, there is contraceptives containing estrogen. If taken, it may affect the quality of breast milk and cause the baby to develop prematurely. Therefore, if mothers must take this type of medicine, it is recommended that they suspend breastfeeding for a period of time.
