Location of the hymen

In fact, the hymen is not a layer of membrane in the literal sense. It is actually a very thin and delicate mucous membrane tissue, located about 5 cm away from the vaginal opening, in the shape of a circle of circular folds. There are holes on the normal hymen, which may be ring-shaped, semicircular, sieve-shaped, etc., which are called hymenal pores. The mucous membrane tissue of the hymen contains rich microvessels, nerve endings, etc. Therefore, when the hymen ruptures, women often experience a small amount of vaginal bleeding accompanied by pain.

When a virgin has sexual intercourse for the first time, the male's penis inserts into the female's vagina, often breaking the hymen and forming a crack. The cracks in the hymen are often multiple, extending radially from the center to the surrounding areas. Since the male's penis generally enters downward and inward, the cracks are deeper below the two sides of the vaginal opening and can reach the base. This is called complete rupture. Sometimes, because the man uses too much force during sexual intercourse, the nearby vaginal wall may also be torn. For women who have given birth, the hymen is further damaged as the fetus is delivered through the vagina, leaving it incomplete. Sometimes only a few remaining protrusions are left, which are called hymen scars. If the baby is delivered by caesarean section, the hymen will retain its post-marriage shape because the baby is delivered through the incision in the lower abdomen and not through the vagina.

The chance of pregnancy even if the hymen is not broken

1. If a woman has sexual intercourse for the first time, her hymen is not broken, she only rubs against the outside, and the man does not ejaculate, then the probability of the woman getting pregnant is 0; if she rubs against the outside, she ejaculates but does not flow into the vaginal opening, the probability of pregnancy is also 0.

2. If the woman is in her safe period and it is her first sexual intercourse, her hymen is not broken, and the man ejaculates near the vaginal opening, the semen may slide into the vagina and combine with the egg, but the possibility of pregnancy is small and rarely occurs.

3. If the woman is in her ovulation period and the man ejaculates, she can still get pregnant even if her hymen is not broken, and the chance of pregnancy is much higher than in the previous case.

Reasons why pregnancy may occur if the hymen is not broken

It is possible to get pregnant even if there is no hymen, because the hymen has many shapes and there are some small holes on it, from which menstrual blood flows out. Those small holes are big enough for sperm to crawl in. For example, if you have sexual intercourse with a man, although the hymen is not broken, the semen ejaculated by the man is deposited at the vaginal opening, and it is very likely to flow into the vagina through the small holes in the hymen, especially if the hymen opening is large and the man is relatively young and strong, in this case, pregnancy is very likely to occur.

The mysterious explanation of the hymen

The hymen covers the vagina near the external opening, is about 1 to 2 mm thick, and has a small hole in the middle, called the "hymen hole", with a diameter of about 1 cm. It is usually round, oval or serrated; some are crescent-shaped, with the hole on one side; some are septum-shaped, with two small holes arranged vertically or horizontally; some have many scattered small holes, like a sieve.

During menstruation, menstrual blood is discharged from the body through this small hole. If there are no small holes in the membrane, the monthly menstrual blood will be blocked, accumulate in the vagina, and expand upward to the uterine cavity and fallopian tubes, and even flow into the abdominal cavity, causing damage to the fallopian tubes, intestinal adhesions, and abdominal infection. This is medically called "hymen occlusion" and gynecological surgery must be performed.

During female puberty, the ovaries secrete less estrogen, the vaginal mucosa is thin, the walls are less wrinkled, the acidity is low, and the resistance is weak. The hymen has the function of blocking bacteria from invading the vagina. After puberty, with the development of the ovaries, the amount of estrogen in the body increases, the resistance of the vagina increases, and the hymen loses its function.

During the first sexual intercourse, the hymen is broken and a tear is formed, causing bleeding. Due to the different shapes of the hymen, the degree of rupture can vary greatly, and the degree of pain will also vary. The septate hymen bleeds more, accompanied by more severe pain. The labial hymen bleeds very little and is almost painless. A thick and elastic umbrella-shaped hymen may not rupture at all!

According to a survey of American gynecologists, about 30% of women do not bleed during their first sexual intercourse. This 30% includes the more elastic umbrella-shaped hymen, which may rupture after multiple sexual intercourses or after a particularly wild sexual journey, but may not necessarily cause bleeding.
