What is Metronidazole

In recent years, there have been many reports on new clinical developments in the application of metronidazole. Metronidazole has a history of decades of application. Its anti-anaerobic effect was discovered in the early 1990s. It was originally a trichomonas and anti-amoebic drug. Because this drug has the characteristics of low price, high efficacy, easy to take and low toxicity. It has certain effects on various clinical diseases.

Metronidazole tablets efficacy

Peptic ulcer

It has been proven that Helicobacter pylori is the pathogen of non-autoimmune chronic gastritis and one of the main pathogenic factors of peptic ulcer. Data show that about 70% to 90% of patients with gastric ulcers and more than 95% of patients with duodenal ulcers have Helicobacter pylori colonization in the stomach, and this bacterium is sensitive to metronidazole. Usage: Metronidazole 0.4 grams each time, 3 times a day, for 4 weeks.

Pseudomembranous enterocolitis

Pseudomembranous enterocolitis is an acute necrotic inflammation of the intestinal mucosa, with pseudomembrane formation on the necrotic mucosa. The occurrence of this disease is related to the long-term use of antibiotics. The drug of choice is vancomycin, which is prone to relapse after discontinuation of the drug. Literature reports that metronidazole is as effective as oral vancomycin in treating pseudomembranous colitis. Usage: 0.6 grams of metronidazole each time, 3 times a day, 7 to 14 days as a course of treatment.

Crohn's disease

Five cases of Crohn's disease were reported abroad, with a course of 4 months to 12 years. They were treated with metronidazole 0.6 to 1.8 grams per day for 1 to 4 weeks, and their symptoms improved. The efficacy was higher than that of sulfamethoxazole. The mechanism of action may include: 1. Antimicrobial effect; 2. Immunosuppressive effect; 3. Direct effect on tissue healing.

Hyperlipidemia

Metronidazole can reduce lipids relatively quickly in the treatment of hyperlipidemia, has significant efficacy and a short course of treatment. There were 52 patients in the control group treated with metronidazole and clofibrate, and 73 patients with hyperlipidemia. One course of treatment was 10 days, 3 times a day, and each metronidazole tablet was 0.4 grams. The control group included 21 cases. One course of treatment consisted of 4 weeks. The patients took 0.5 g of clofibrate 3 times a day. Results The total effective rates of metronidazole and triglyceride in lowering cholesterol were 83.9% and 73.7%, respectively. There was no significant difference compared with clofibrate.

Chronic liver disease bleeding gums

Usage: Take 0.2 grams of metronidazole three times a day. Gingival bleeding will completely stop 2 to 7 days after taking the medicine. The recent effective rate is 100%. Its mechanism of action is: Metronidazole shortens the coagulation time and promotes the conversion of fibrinogen into fibrin; it also has an anticoagulant effect against heparin.

Chronic colitis

The reason why metronidazole treatment is effective may be related to the dense flora in the colon or some kind of immunosuppressive effect. The nitro group has a repairing effect on the diseased mucosa and reduces the formation of intermediate metabolites. Regarding the cause of this disease, the current trend is towards autoimmunity. Usage: Oral, 3 times a day, 0.4 grams each time, 30 days as a course of treatment, after 15 days, change to 0.2 grams each time.

Intestinal ascariasis

Qin et al. used metronidazole to experimentally treat 150 cases of intestinal roundworm infection. The patients took 0.4 grams half an hour before each meal for three consecutive days. The total effective rate of deworming was 54%, with few side effects.

Hepatic encephalopathy

Foreign researchers used metronidazole and neomycin as a control treatment for 18 patients with hepatic encephalopathy. They were randomly divided into groups and took 1.0 gram of neomycin or 0.2 gram of metronidazole orally 4 times a day for 1 week. The results showed that the two drugs had similar efficacy in treating hepatic encephalopathy, and thus could make up for some of the shortcomings of neomycin, which may be related to its inhibition of small intestinal anaerobic bacteria and reduction of endogenous ammonia production.

tetanus

Studies in recent years have found that metronidazole has anti-tetanus effects and is suitable for people who are allergic to TAT. Usage: Take 0.6 grams of metronidazole each time, 3 times a day, for 7 consecutive days.

Metronidazole tablets effects

1. Treatment of gynecological diseases

Suppositories made with metronidazole and norfloxacin as the main drugs are used in the clinical treatment of various vaginitis. The total effective rate is 93.6% and the total cure rate is 75.61%, which is significantly better than the efficacy of other suppositories (p<0.01). During episiotomy, 50 ml of 0.5% metronidazole injection plus distilled water to 1000 ml was used to rinse the wound. Compared with rinsing the wound with 1% chlorhexidine solution and intramuscular injection of penicillin or gentamicin, the postoperative infection rates were 1.34% and 5-6%, respectively. After surgery, the wound was scrubbed with metronidazole solution twice a day until the stitches were removed, without the addition of any antibiotics, and the effect was good〈3〉. Someone divided 120 cases of acute pelvic inflammatory disease into two groups, A and B, for antibacterial treatment. Group A used metronidazole and cefotaxime, and Group B used gentamicin and cefotaxime. After 3 days of medication, the efficacy of Group A was significantly higher than that of Group B. When Group B switched to metronidazole, the infection was quickly controlled and there was no recurrence. This suggests that metronidazole is an ideal drug for the treatment of gynecological infections.

2. Treatment of respiratory diseases

Sun Guanghui et al. treated 77 patients with acute exacerbation of chronic bronchitis with metronidazole. That is, they added 200 ml of 0.5% metronidazole injection on top of conventional antibiotic treatment and intravenously dripped it for five days. The total effective rate reached 92.5%. Another report: Adding metronidazole to treat 18 patients with empyema who were not well responded to antibiotic treatment achieved satisfactory results. Methods: Use 0.5% metronidazole 250ml intravenous drip every 12 hours, and drain pus by thoracentesis; use 0.5% metronidazole to repeatedly flush the chest cavity QD, and one course of treatment is 7 days. The results showed that 16 cases were markedly effective and 2 cases were effective (3).

3. Prevention and treatment of anaerobic infectious diseases

Because metronidazole has a strong anti-anaerobic effect, it can be used to treat infectious diseases caused by anaerobic bacteria in various systems, such as sepsis, endocarditis, lower respiratory tract infection, intra-abdominal infection, central nervous system, bone and joint, skin and soft tissue infection, maxillary sinusitis, liver abscess, cholecystitis, chronic colitis and chronic prostatitis. Metronidazole can also prevent postoperative incision infection after appendectomy. Reduce the incidence of infection after bone trauma. It has a significant effect in preventing postoperative abdominal adhesions.

4. Treatment of oral diseases

Oral administration of metronidazole 0.4 g, 3 times a day, 1 week as a course of treatment, was used to treat 32 cases of chronic gingivitis, with an effective rate of 81.2%. 300 cases of simple gingival bleeding were treated with metronidazole, and the bleeding completely stopped and the inflammation subsided within 2 to 7 days. Some people used metronidazole and zinc sulfate to make a compound metronidazole solution to treat 96 cases of oral ulcers. The cure rate within 4 days was 97.6%, with no adverse reactions. The total effective rates of 5% metronidazole solution in the treatment of acute and chronic periapical periodontitis were 91.7% and 100%, respectively. The use of metronidazole adhesive sustained-release tablets to treat periodontal disease has also achieved significant results, and metronidazole has become a new type of drug in stomatology.

5. Treatment of peptic ulcer

A comparative study was conducted on the efficacy of metronidazole (treatment group n=118, 0.2g/3 times/d 4w) and cimetidine (control group n=118, 0.2g/3 times/d 4w) in 157 patients with peptic ulcer. The patients were followed up for four years and observed under electron microscopy before and after treatment. The results showed that the cure rates of duodenal ulcer were 78.8% and 75.9%, respectively (P>0.05). The cure rates of gastric ulcers were 100% and 60%, respectively (p< 0.05). The three-year recurrence rates were 6.8% and 72%, respectively. Conclusion: Metronidazole is effective in treating peptic ulcer, can improve gastric mucosal epithelial cells and their secretory function, and strengthen the gastric mucous barrier and mucus barrier.

6. Treatment of Dermatological Diseases

: : : : : : : : : : : : : : : In conclusion, metronidazole is effective for a variety of skin diseases, which may be related to its insecticidal, anti-allergic and anti-anaerobic effects.

7. Treatment of hyperlipidemia

Oral administration of metronidazole 0.4 g twice a day for 2 weeks can reduce serum cholesterol (CH) by 22.8% and triglycerides (TG) by 37.5%. Zhao Qichun et al. reported that since 1991, 50 cases of hyperlipidemia have been treated with metronidazole, and all achieved satisfactory results. It is also believed that metronidazole has a rapid onset of effect, a short course of treatment, and few side effects in the treatment of hyperlipidemia. It can be regarded as a fast-acting, effective and safe lipid-lowering drug.

Conclusion: Metronidazole is not only helpful for women's gynecological diseases, but also can treat tetanus, hepatic encephalopathy, chronic colitis, intestinal ascariasis, chronic liver disease, bleeding gums, etc. In short, it is very necessary to keep some metronidazole at home in case of emergency.
