What to do if milk is swollen and painful and can't be squeezed out

For all mothers, breastfeeding is a novel experience, but due to the lack of experience of new mothers, they will always face various problems, such as milk engorgement, milk stasis, mastitis and other possibilities. So what are the reasons for postpartum milk engorgement and pain and inability to squeeze out the milk? Is there any good way to alleviate it? Let us take a closer look at it below, and we hope it will be helpful to all new mothers.

This is milk blockage!

Don't apply hot compress first, apply cold compress first.

1. We use a cheese cold compress here. If you don’t have it, you can use a towel for cold compress. Keep applying the cold compress and then apply a hot compress before feeding (use a hot towel).

2. Do not rub the lump when breastfeeding. Use your fingers to press against the lump and squeeze it gently to help the baby suck out as much milk as possible. If the milk is not sucked out, take a hot shower to drain the remaining milk.

3. You can also ask your husband to massage the inside of your shoulder blades, up and down. Massage the side where the lump is.

4. You can also use a wooden comb or a horn comb to gently comb the lump towards the nipple.

These methods work well together!

Another thing to note is to drink more water, rest more, and don't feed too much on the side with the lump, but you must feed it, otherwise there will be no milk! You can just feed both sides alternately, because the more you feed, the more milk you will produce! Also, don't eat too much meat, don't add too much broth, make the milk as thin as possible, and don't add too much!

If the situation doesn't improve, go see a Chinese doctor for massage, it's very effective! It's best not to see a Western doctor first, as Western doctors usually use antibiotics and won't let you breastfeed! But you have to hurry up, as milk will stop flowing if it accumulates for too long!

Breast pain and inability to express milk may indicate blocked milk ducts. It is recommended to keep a happy mood, ensure adequate sleep, massage along the direction of the mammary ducts to keep them unobstructed, and ask a lactation consultant for assistance if necessary. Drink more water, soup and porridge, and let your baby suck more to promote milk secretion.
