Why do breasts hurt?

Most women will experience breast pain before their period. This phenomenon is typical physiological breast pain, so women do not need to worry too much. However, if the breast pain lasts too long, it is likely caused by a disease. Only by finding the exact cause can effective treatment be carried out. So why do breasts hurt? Let's take a look below.

First, why do breasts hurt? Acute mastitis. What causes breast pain in women? It is most likely acute mastitis. Acute mastitis is an acute suppurative infection of the breast, which mainly occurs during the lactation period and is more common in primiparas. It is related to milk stasis, lack of attention to breast hygiene and breast damage. It manifests as chills, fever, severe redness, swelling and pain in the breast, and is often accompanied by tenderness. In severe cases, abscesses are formed.

Second, breast pain after abortion. After an abortion, some women experience breast tenderness and a lump. This is caused by the sudden interruption of pregnancy, which causes a sharp drop in hormone levels, causing the newly developed mammary glands to suddenly stop growing, resulting in breast lumps and breast pain, which usually gradually improves after 1 to 2 months.

Third, breast hyperplasia. Breast hyperplasia is a non-inflammatory, non-tumor proliferation of intraglandular tissue, which manifests as breast lumps and breast pain. The pain and distension vary in severity and are often cyclical, becoming noticeable before menstruation or between two menstrual periods and subsiding after menstruation.

Fourth, breast pain during pregnancy. For some women, around 40 days after pregnancy, the placenta and chorion secrete large amounts of estrogen and progesterone, which can cause breast hyperplasia and breast enlargement, leading to breast pain and discomfort. In severe cases, the pain may last throughout the entire pregnancy.

Why do breasts hurt? Chronic mastitis. Chronic mastitis is a rare type of breast pain that mostly occurs in middle-aged and elderly women. It is related to infection after injury and the pain is relatively mild. Breast fibroadenoma. Breast fibroadenoma is a benign tumor that often occurs in middle-aged and young women. Its main manifestation is breast lumps, or local swelling and pain before or at the beginning of menstruation.
